The Saudi Pro League has long been dominated by its four biggest clubs. They are known for their success and significant financial backing. These clubs have been the primary beneficiaries of the recent surge of investments in the league, allowing them to attract some of the world’s most renowned football stars. This influx of talent has only solidified their position at the top, creating a challenging environment for the smaller teams.
However, one club defied the odds last season and shook up this established order. Despite the financial and star power disparity, this club showcased resilience, skill, and tactical brilliance to compete with the league’s heavyweights. Their impressive performance disrupted the traditional hierarchy and signaled a shift in the league’s competitive balance, proving that upsets are always possible with determination and strategic play.
Given their dominance and squad quality, Al Hilal’s capture of their record-extending 19th title was widely anticipated. Likewise, it was no shock that Al Nassr and Al Ahli closely trailed, as both teams have consistently been among the league’s top performers, benefiting from significant investment and high-profile signings. Their presence near the top of the table reinforced the expected hierarchy within the Saudi Pro League.
The real surprise, however, unfolded in the battle for fourth place. Instead of the usual powerhouse, Al Ittihad, Al Taawoun rose to the occasion. Al Taawoun’s unexpected ascent disrupted the established order, showcasing their growth and ambition in a league often defined by the success of its biggest clubs. Their impressive performance marked a shift in the league’s dynamics. It set a new standard for other underdog teams aiming to challenge the traditional giants.
The Buraidah-based team had only ever finished higher once before, securing third place in the 2018-19 season. This year, they will return to continental competition, participating in the newly introduced AFC Champions League Two, marking only the fourth time in their history.
Al Taawoun’s most significant result early in the season was their stunning 2-0 upset against Al Nassr. They also managed to secure draws in their encounters with Al Ittihad.
Amidst the wave of high-profile stars moving to Saudi Arabia, Al Taawoun’s most notable acquisition was Musa Barrow. Even before turning 25, Barrow had already made a name for himself in Serie A with Atalanta and Bologna.
After being part of a team that surpassed expectations last season, Barrow is eager to make an even more significant impact and draw more attention in the 2024-25 season.
“Last season was a great test for us. It proved we can compete with any team,” remarked the Gambian international.
“Last season was a great test for us. It proved we can compete with any team,” said the Gambia international.
“This season is going to be a new challenge and we know it’s not going to be easy because we have four competitions to play, starting with the Super Cup, the King’s Cup, the ACL (AFC Champions League Two) and the league.
“We’re (aware) it’s not going.
“I think this season, with all of the new teams and also the bigger teams, every game is going to be a tough game (but) we’re going to surprise them like we did last season.
“We’re looking forward to it. It’s going to be tough but hard work pays off, so we’re ready for that.”
Following their split with Péricles Chamusca at the end of last season, Al Taawoun has appointed Argentine Rodolfo Arruabarrena as their new coach. Arruabarrena, who previously managed Boca Juniors and most recently led the United Arab Emirates national team, will now take over at Al Taawoun.
Barrow shared that the team is already adapting to their new coach’s tactics, aiming for even greater success in the upcoming season.
“I’m getting to know him (Arruabarrena) more — as a person (and) as a coach. It’s important for us,” he continued.
“Every coach has their own philosophy so we’re trying to adapt to the play he wants. I hope we deliver the things that he is implementing for the team.
“My personal goal is just to do better than last season and help Al Taawoun to reach the highest level of the league. (And) maybe win some trophies, inshallah (God willing).”
