Getting Started with RSL Fantasy – Saudi Pro League

The inaugural full season of the Roshn Saudi League Fantasy game has begun. Three weeks before the new campaign’s kickoff, managers can select their squads and experiment with different combinations.

Launched in November 2023, the popular interactive game quickly attracted 181,000 enthusiastic users. Players have embraced the challenges of managing their chosen Roshn Saudi League squad, all while competing for major prizes at the end of the season.

Here’s a brief guide on participating in what promises to be another fiercely competitive season.

What is Roshn Saudi League Fantasy?

The Saudi Pro League version represents the latest development in a rich, 150-year tradition of sports simulation games. This tradition began in New York City shortly after the American Civil War, with early versions focusing on baseball. Over time, this concept has evolved significantly, now encompassing a wide range of sports and competitions.

In the modern iteration of the game, known as the 21st-century version, sports enthusiasts create squads using real-life team rosters from ongoing competitions. They then earn points based on their selected players’ performances in the real world. This format allows fans to engage deeply with the sport, making strategic decisions that reflect real-time game results.

Today, the sports fantasy industry has burgeoned into a multi-billion-dollar sector, with more than 100 million participants globally. The most widely recognized versions are associated with Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), and the English Premier League (EPL), each drawing large numbers of dedicated players.

The newest entrant to this global phenomenon is Roshn Saudi League Fantasy, creating buzz across Saudi Arabia and beyond. Its trial launch during the 2023-24 season attracted participants from 51 countries. Managers from diverse locations, including Kazakhstan, Aruba, and Australia, joined in the excitement, assembling their teams and participating in this innovative fantasy sports experience.

How can I play RSL Fantasy?

The game rules are straightforward: you start with a budget of SAR 100 million to build a 15-player squad. You aim to create a team that earns the most points by the end of the 2024-25 Roshn Saudi League season. Points are awarded for scoring goals, providing assists, and maintaining clean sheets. At the same time, penalties include losing points for yellow or red cards, conceding or missing penalties, and other factors.

Before you start selecting players from last season’s top team, Al Hilal, the reigning Roshn Saudi League champions, or the runners-up Al Nassr, led by goal-scoring star Cristiano Ronaldo, be aware that you can only pick up to three players from each club.

You’re allowed one free transfer per match week, enabling you to replace injured or underperforming players and take advantage of favorable fixtures. However, all squad changes must be made before the match-week deadline.

The deadline for making changes is five minutes before the first kickoff of the match. This deadline also applies to selecting your captain, who will earn double points.

Can I compete with friends?

Absolutely! In addition to competing for overall and weekly prizes, you can set up your own private league. Share an invitation link with your friends to create a personalized competition.

Alternatively, you can join any of the public leagues frequently organized by enthusiasts or companies. This allows you to engage with a broader community and participate in leagues beyond your immediate circle.

Who won last season?

In the inaugural season, Hamad Al Tuwaijri, a 28-year-old from Qassim, claimed the grand prize of SAR 250,000. Sultan Al Otaibi, a 37-year-old from Riyadh, secured second place and received SAR 150,000. The third-place prize of SAR 100,000 went to Ghenwa Al Zain, a Dubai-based brand manager from Lebanon and one of the 7,400 female participants.
