On Tuesday, after defeating Al-Ittihad 2-0 in the Asian Champions League quarterfinals, Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League established a record for the most consecutive victories by a top-tier team worldwide. This was their 28th straight victory.

The previous record held by Welsh Premier League champion The New Saints (TNS) from the 2016–17 season surpassed Jorge Jesus’ team with 27 straight wins. TNS also overcame the record of Ajax Amsterdam’s 26-game winning streak, which had stood for 44 years.

“This is truly an incredible achievement, and I want to thank everyone at the club for their part in this momentous winning record,” said manager Jesus.

Manager Jesus’ words echo the team’s unwavering determination. He emphasizes that, despite the impressive records, the ultimate goal is to win trophies. This commitment is sure to inspire the team and the fans alike.

Jesus’ side leads the Saudi league with 65 points, 12 ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, which was eliminated from the Asian Champions League on Monday after a penalty shootout loss to Al-Ain.

Al-Hilal, the 2022 runner-up, will face Al-Ain in the semifinals.

Jesus’ side can extend its winning run when it hosts Damac in the league on Saturday.

Saudi Pro League: Al Nassr defeats Al Ahli thanks to a Ronaldo penalty, with VAR disallowing goals for both teams

In the 68th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo scored three points for his team by finishing the penalty kick from the bottom left corner.

On March 16, in the Saudi Pro League, Al Nassr defeated Al Ahli by a single goal away from home. The game was fiercely contested, with both sides producing scoring opportunities.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty in the 68th minute proved to be the difference.

In the 68th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo scored three points for his team by finishing the penalty kick from the bottom left corner.

Ronaldo had previously found the back of the net in the 42nd minute, but a lengthy VAR review had declared him offside. The flag stayed down when Sadio Mane on the right played a ball to Ronaldo, but VAR later disallowed the goal, changing the course of the match.

VAR scored for the 57th time, but it ended Al Ahli’s celebrations this time. Roberto Firmino scored with an easy tap-in after Alana Saint-Maximin’s right-wing pass. However, that move was later also ruled offside.

Al Ahli appeared to be the stronger team at the beginning of the match. Even when Merih Demiral’s header from Riyad Mahrez’s corner hit the crossbar, it was stopped by the post in the 37th minute.

Al Nassr picked up the pace and dominated the second 45. Despite Ahli’s push for a goal in the dying embers of the game, Nassr’s penalty conceded due to a tackle by Roger Ibanez on Al Najei was enough for it to gain three points.

Nassr remains second, nine points behind Al Hilal, which has a game in hand in the Saudi Pro League.
