As the midfielder pens a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Eredivisie club, the football world eagerly awaits his debut after his departure from the Saudi Pro League team.
Jordan Henderson “mutually agreed” to end his contract with Al Ettifaq, a Saudi Pro League team, and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Ajax.
The England midfielder, who only relocated to the kingdom from Liverpool last summer, has chosen to leave the Middle East after six months and seventeen Premier League matches.
Before the Eredivisie team officially announced the deal later on Thursday, Henderson finalized terms and underwent a medical examination in Amsterdam. This process involved discussions about salary, contract length, and the necessary health assessments to ensure his fitness for the new club. Completing these steps signified both his commitment to the move and the eagerness of both parties to finalize the transfer swiftly, paving the way for the next chapter in his career.
This implies that Steven Gerrard, the current manager of Ettifaq and a former teammate at Liverpool, has lost a valuable player. The team is sitting in the middle of the table, lagging leader Al Hilal by 28 points.
“Firstly, the club would like to thank Jordan for his efforts and wish him the best for his future endeavours,” said club president Samer Al Misehal in a statement. “We are always respectful of our players.”
“The club and Jordan believe this quick decision, without any delay or further distraction, has been made for both the overall good of the club and for Jordan.”
Henderson was believed to be worried that staying at Ettifaq would hurt his chances of being selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad. In addition, there were rumors that his family, who reside in nearby Bahrain, was having trouble relocating to the area. This family situation was a significant factor in his decision to leave the club.
“I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect,” Henderson wrote on social media.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family.”
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the club and the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from day one.
“I’ll keep watching and hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.”
The 33-year-old will join an Ajax side struggling this season. They sit fifth in the Eredivisie and 23 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven. This follows a disappointing finish last season and recent managerial changes. Henderson’s arrival is expected to provide the leadership and experience needed to help the team regain its advantage over rivals in both domestic and European markets.
“We wanted an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities,” Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip told the club’s website.
“Partially due to injuries in the team, we were looking for someone who could step in immediately. Jordan Henderson is that type of player.
“His arrival means a huge enhancement for our squad. Both on and off the pitch, a football player of this calibre is important for our many young players.”
“He’s an English international player and has won the Champions League and many other prizes with Liverpool. I am happy he’s here.”
As a non-EU national, Henderson is unlikely to play against RKC Waalwijk on Sunday because his work permit could be approved in up to two weeks.
His career began at his home club, Sunderland, and he joined Liverpool in 2011. Later, he made 492 appearances, netting 33 goals and taking home seven major trophies from the Merseyside team for the Reds.
