Club Tijuana was leading at the half, but they could not maintain the lead, and they are now eliminated
The Xolos of Tijuana fell short in their pursuit of success in the Leagues Cup, enduring a significant defeat at the hands of the MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps. Despite starting the match strongly and taking an early lead, they ultimately succumbed to a 3-1 loss at BC Place in Canada. The match was marked by ups and downs for the Tijuana squad, showcasing their initial promise but ultimately highlighting their struggles to maintain momentum against a determined Vancouver side. This disappointing result eliminated them from the tournament and left them reflecting on what could have been.
During the first half, Tijuana exerted dominance on the field, consistently launching a series of dangerous attacks that put pressure on Vancouver’s goalkeeper, Yohei Takaoka. Their offensive strategy showcased their skill and determination as they sought to capitalize on every opportunity. However, despite their impressive build-up play and numerous chances, their inability to finish meant they could only convert one of these opportunities into a goal.
Kevin Castañeda broke the deadlock in the 8th minute, executing a well-placed shot that ricocheted off the left post and into the net. This impressive strike came even as defenders were closing in on him inside the Canadian penalty area, highlighting his composure and skill under pressure. Although Tijuana’s early lead was promising, it ultimately set the stage for the challenges ahead in the match.
The Tijuana side was caught off guard at the start of the second half, as Fafá Picault managed to equalize for Vancouver just four minutes in. He made a swift run down the left wing with remarkable speed and agility, skillfully maneuvering past defenders. As he approached the penalty area, he deftly got in front of Antonio Rodríguez, creating enough space for his next move.
With precision and confidence, Picault delivered a perfectly timed cross that found the back of the net, leveling the match at 1-1. This sudden shift reignited the Whitecaps’ hopes and stunned the Tijuana players, who had entered the second half with momentum. The equalizer changed the game’s dynamics, setting the stage for a tense battle as both teams sought to gain control.
A few minutes later, an unfortunate incident unfolded for “Toño” Rodríguez when the ball struck him directly in the face during a heated play. The impact left him momentarily incapacitated, causing him to stumble and struggle to regain his composure. Recognizing that he could not continue safely, the medical staff quickly assessed his condition and determined that he needed to be taken off the field for further evaluation.
In his absence, veteran goalkeeper Jesús Corona was called upon to step in and replace him. Known for his experience and leadership, Corona’s presence stabilized the team in a challenging situation. The substitution marked a significant moment in the match, as both players and fans held their breath, hoping for Rodríguez’s swift recovery while looking to Corona to rise to the occasion.
The dynamics of the match shifted dramatically in the second half as the Whitecaps intensified their efforts and began to dominate possession. Their relentless pressure and aggressive attacking strategies created a sense of urgency on the field. As the clock ticked down, Tijuana struggled to regain their earlier momentum, allowing Vancouver to seize control of the game.
In the 77th minute, Levonte Johnson made a pivotal play that would prove crucial for his team. Positioned just outside the penalty area, he skillfully maneuvered past a defender and unleashed a powerful shot that rocketed toward the goal. The ball struck with precision, finding the right side of the net and leaving Tijuana’s goalkeeper with no chance to react. This moment not only put Vancouver ahead but also ignited a surge of energy among the home crowd, who erupted in cheers as the Whitecaps took the lead and shifted the momentum firmly in their favor.
Just six minutes later, Pedro Vite added a third goal for Vancouver on a counterattack, sending the ball into the net alongside the left post, leaving “Chuy” Corona with no chance to save it. Juan Carlos Osorio’s recent expulsion from the competition seemed to weigh heavily on the team, but now they must redirect their focus toward their upcoming Liga MX match and move past their disappointing experience in the United States.
