In September, the U.S. men’s national team is set to ignite the field with thrilling friendlies against Jesse Marsch-led Canada and the formidable New Zealand, a recurring World Cup participant. The 24-man lineup, a testament to the team’s strength, includes two MLS players: the agile goalkeeper Patrick Schulte of Columbus Crew and the solid center-back Tim Ream of Charlotte FC.

The USMNT, a resilient force, is coming together under a new leadership after head coach Gregg Berhalter’s departure from U.S. Soccer. This transition, following Copa América 2024’s Group Stage exit, is a testament to the team’s adaptability and determination, two years before the team co-hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
Mikey Varas, a former FC Dallas assistant coach, will be the USMNT’s acting head coach for their September training camp. After leading the United States in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Varas is expected to take over as the first head coach of San Diego FC. This MLS expansion team will open in 2025.
Mauricio Pochettino is expected to take over as the USMNT’s next permanent head coach in the interim. Pochettino has held leadership positions at Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and three European teams.
With two Olympians from Paris 2024, including the talented goalie Schulte, Columbus had a senior-team appearance after Schulte’s instrumental role in leading Team USA to the quarterfinals. Schulte’s victories in the Leagues Cup with the Crew and the MLS Cup presented by Audi in the previous calendar year are a testament to his skill and dedication, making him a player to watch and support.
Ream moved to Charlotte this summer from Premier League team Fulham, having spent almost ten years in England. The only player on this USMNT team with more caps than the seasoned defender is Christian Pulisic of AC Milan (71).
Midfielder Aidan Morris and left-back Caleb Wiley are in USMNT training after completing summer transfers from Major League Soccer to Europe. Morris moved from Columbus to Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship. In contrast, Wiley moved from Atlanta United to Chelsea (on loan at Strasbourg in Ligue 1).
Matt Turner, a former goalkeeper with the New England Revolution, signed a deadline-day loan to Crystal Palace, a move that has significantly improved his game. After playing in Germany’s Bundesliga, Brenden Aaronson, a product of the Philadelphia Union, is back at Leeds United in the EFL Championship, a move that has further honed his skills.
Fulham left defender Antonee Robinson and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie were left off the pitch to allow them time for rest and recovery.
Numerous other prominent players are sidelined due to injuries, including Tyler Adams of Bournemouth, Tim Weah of Juventus, and Sergiño Dest, fullback for PSV.
