Tales Magno, a winger for the NYCFC, will leave the team this summer, but no formal offer has been made for the Brazilian yet.
Magno has only played six minutes of MLS play this season; initially, because of an injury, he has been an unutilized substitute recently. With a reported transfer fee of $8 million, the 22-year-old is among the most costly additions to the NYCFC in club history.
NYCFC and Magno are waiting for an official approach during the early stages of the transfer window in Europe and Brazil.
“We’ve had no offers for him right now,” NYCFC sporting director David Lee told GiveMeSport in an exclusive interview. “If that changes, we’ll consider it and see if it makes sense for us and Talles. There’s no guarantee that’ll happen.”
Magno himself told reporters last month, “I don’t think so,” when asked if he’d still be an NYCFC player once the summer windows close. NYCFC remained calm on the matter.
“The window is open, we’ll assess if there are opportunities that come for Talles,” Lee said. “It has to make sense for us; it has to make sense for Talles. We’re happy to have him in the squad, he’s a good player and you want as many good players as you can. We know he’d like to play more than he has.”
Player | Fee | Year |
Jovan Mijatovic | $8.6m | 2024 |
Alexandru Mitrita | ~$8m | 2019 |
Talles Magno | ~$8m | 2021 |
Although Brazil is very interested, Magno is waiting for opportunities in Europe. According to sources, Bologna’s loan request was turned down last season. NYCFC could only have approved a permanent relocation if it made sense for them.
Due to the usual European market cadence, Magno is more likely to receive an offer later in the window. The option to return to Brazil at the end of the summer will still exist because the Brazilian transfer window coincides with the European calendar.
Magno has been connected to the Brazilian teams Vasco da Gama, Atlético Mineiro, and Bahia. Additionally, City Football Group owns Bahia.
Magno showed promise during his time in Major League Soccer but ultimately fell short of high expectations. An incredible dribbler who made his debut at Vasco at 16 was playing crucial minutes consistently at 18, and NYCFC was widely applauded for the acquisition. Injury dogged his 2021 MLS debut season, but he turned in a standout 2022 campaign in which he played in all 34 regular season and concluded with eight assists and seven goals in nine games.
Based on his underlying stats, Magno appeared to be among the league’s top players. Regarding non-penalty expected goals and successful take-ons among wingers, he was in the 84th and 87th percentiles, respectively.
Magno’s modest four goals and two assists in thirty appearances in 2023 did not help him build on that breakthrough season. At times during the year, he was miscast as a center forward.
Stat | Percentile |
Non-penalty xG | 84th |
Assists | 81st |
Successful take-ons | 87th |
Progressive carries | 84th |
“The season hasn’t gone how we or Talles would have hoped or expected,” Lee said. “He had a strong end to the 2023 season. We were expecting him to maintain or improve on those levels, but he had an injury in preseason and missed most of preseason. … We’ve had good performances from our wingers that has made it difficult for him to get back into the team.”
In the NYCFC’s 4-2-3-1, Santi Rodriguez and Hannes Wolff are mainstays, with Julian Fernandez, Agustin Ojeda, and Malachi Jones sharing playing time. Alonso Martinez, Jovan Mijatovic, and Mounsef Bakrar have all accumulated the most minutes. Magno hasn’t had any space.
With 35 points from 22 games, NYCFC is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference after a fantastic 2024 season. Magno’s departure might allow the team to add another important player. Magno now holds the most valuable roster spot in Major League Soccer (MLS), a designated player slot.
