As the 2024 MLS summer transfer window continues, several high-profile players in Europe remain without a club. Some of these free agents possess the qualities that would make them excellent additions to MLS sides. While a few big names have already made the jump to MLS, like Olivier Giroud (LAFC) and Marco Reus (LA Galaxy), plenty of talent remains available. Here’s a look at seven free agents who could not just join but significantly impact MLS, ranging from marquee stars to shrewd, under-the-radar signings.
Age: 30
Position: Forward/Attacking Midfielder
Former Clubs: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid
Memphis Depay would be a massive coup for any MLS club willing to meet his salary demands. The Dutch international, known for his flair and creativity, is still an integral part of the Netherlands national team. Although Depay didn’t play consistently for Atletico Madrid last season, he was effective when given the chance, scoring 9 goals and providing 2 assists in just 1,205 minutes.
His experience at top European clubs like Barcelona and Atletico and his 98 caps for the Netherlands make Depay a prime target for MLS—if the financials align. Clubs like Atlanta United and Charlotte FC, with open Designated Player (DP) spots, could potentially bring him in. However, it would likely require significant effort to offload current players to make room.
Age: 27
Position: Attacking Midfielder/Winger
Former Club: Lokomotiv Moscow
Anton Miranchuk, the twin brother of Atlanta United’s Alexsey Miranchuk, is now a free agent following his departure from Lokomotiv Moscow. His versatility is a force to be reckoned with, as he can operate as an attacking midfielder or on either wing. Last season, he showcased his attacking prowess, tallying 8 goals and 7 assists in 2,200 minutes. With 29 caps for Russia and a trophy cabinet that includes four domestic cups and a league title, Miranchuk would add a significant amount of creativity and depth to any MLS side.
Age: 32
Position: Central Midfielder/Right Back
Former Club: Barcelona
Sergi Roberto, former Barcelona captain, has been linked to MLS, and the timing could now be suitable for a move. Having spent his professional career with the Catalan giants, Roberto made 372 appearances for Barça, often playing in both central midfield and right-back roles. Despite rumors connecting him to Ajax and Aston Villa, his leadership and versatility would make him a valuable addition to any MLS team, especially those looking for experience and tactical flexibility.
Age: 31
Position: Center Back
Former Clubs: Hoffenheim, Benfica
Long rumored to be a target for MLS, John Brooks could finally be heading stateside. The former USMNT defender has vast experience in European football, having spent most of his career in the Bundesliga. Brooks made 39 appearances for Hoffenheim last season, proving he still has plenty to offer. While he was previously only open to an MLS move if he were signed as a DP, a more realistic contract could bring him to the league. Brooks would be a strong candidate for any club needing a dominant center-back.
Age: 31
Position: Center Back
Former Club: Sheffield United
John Egan, a Premier League and Championship veteran, is another defensive option for MLS clubs. The Irish international played a crucial role in Sheffield United’s recent promotion campaigns. Still, an Achilles injury last season has raised concerns about his fitness. Still, if Egan can prove his form in a short trial, he could be a solid addition to any team seeking defensive stability. With 36 caps for Ireland and over 200 appearances in English football, Egan would bring leadership and experience to an MLS backline.
Age: 22
Position: Central Midfielder
Former Club: Bordeaux
Issouf Sissokho is an emerging talent from Bordeaux. His financial troubles led to the cancellation of player contracts, making him a free agent. The Mali international made 65 appearances for Bordeaux and impressed with his ball control and vision. Statistically, Sissokho ranked in the 98th percentile for completed passes and 85th for successful take-ons in Ligue 2 last season. Given MLS clubs’ history of recruiting from France’s second division, Sissokho could be a shrewd acquisition for teams looking to bolster their midfield.
Age: 22
Position: Forward
Former Club: Bordeaux
Another Bordeaux product, Zan Vipotnik, would be an exciting addition for MLS teams seeking attacking firepower. The Slovenian international scored 10 goals and registered 4 assists in his single season at Bordeaux; following a breakout year at NK Maribor, he was the league’s top scorer with 20 goals. With nine caps for Slovenia and interest from clubs like Hajduk Split and Twente, MLS clubs may need to move quickly to secure the 22-year-old forward.
