Since this week’s official transfer window opening, MLS has been inundated with transfer-related news. The most recent updates are listed below.
The last time Giroud played for France at the Euros
Despite being eligible to debut this weekend, Olivier Giroud has not yet trained with his new teammates at LAFC. Both parties wanted to give Giroud some much-needed rest following a demanding European season and his time representing France at the Euros.
Giroud isn’t anticipated to show up until approximately August 1. Before taking a break for the Leagues Cup, LAFC has one more MLS match. After this weekend, their next MLS match is scheduled for August 24.
The French forward’s League Cup debut is contingent upon LAFC’s performance and team negotiations. There’s not a rush.
As the club and player knew he would be at the Euros, Giroud was never expected to make his debut when he became eligible. His last match occurred on July 9, when France lost to Spain and was knocked out of the competition. Giroud, who began his 2023–24 season with AC Milan a year ago, is receiving a much-needed break to recuperate before the 2024 MLS season comes to an end.
It’s the MLS Cup on December 7. The last two finals were made by LAFC.
Without Giroud, LAFC has had a fantastic season. After 23 games, they are now second in the Western Conference with 43 points. Giroud is available for ten regular MLS games regular season games and, above all, be primed and ready for the postseason.
This season, the 37-year-old striker played 35 league games for AC Milan, contributing 15 goals and 8 assists in 2,372 minutes of action. He joins an attacking group that includes Denis Bouanga, the current MLS Golden Boot winner, Cristian Olivera, an international player from Uruguay, and Mateusz Bogusz, a Polish attacker who has been using a false nine during the first half of the season.
There may be debuts in Houston, Austin, Columbus, and St. Louis this weekend.
The summer transfer window opened on Thursday, and players who have already signed are now eligible to make their debuts. There are plenty of opportunities this weekend.
Both Austin FC club record signing Osman Bukari ($7 million) and Houston Dynamo club record signing Ezequiel Ponce (roughly $5 million plus add-ons) are up for grabs.
The debut of AZ Jackson and Dylan Chambost, the Columbus Crew duo, is imminent. Having only dropped one of their previous eight games, the Crew has gained ground in the Supporters’ Shield competition over the past six weeks. After this weekend, the next Crew game will be at least the Leagues Cup group stage, thanks to their ability to skip it. August 7.
St. Louis City looks to push back into the playoff race with Cedric Teuchert ready to debut. The new DP attacker, Marcel Hartel, hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday but has not yet been confirmed.
Nicolas Freire leaves a void that Inter Miami fills.
According to sources, Inter Miami is closing the deal to sign Paraguay international defender David Martinez from River Plate on a loan basis.
This week, Martinez traveled to Miami for his medical examination. CL Merlo first reported the agreement.
Miami was looking for a new senior center back after Nicolas Freire’s season-ending injury.
Martinez, 26, is a member of the Paraguay national team and has 11 caps. Despite having made 77 appearances for River Plate, he has primarily served as a backup rather than a consistent starter. He should play more minutes with Miami next to Sergii Kryvtsov and Tomas Aviles.
Inter Miami also disclosed Lionel Messi’s right ankle ligament and the player’s anticipated return date: “will be determined by periodic assessments and the progress of his recovery.” Without Messi, Miami has triumphed in five of its previous six games.
Miami has one more league game before the League Cup. Miami won last year’s tournament, a historic run that included Messi’s debut.
The winger will play regularly to promote growth.
According to sources, Atletico Nacional is nearing completion of a loan agreement to sign winger Marino Hinestroza from the Columbus Crew.
As part of the deal, Hinestroza will receive regular playing time, which will help him grow. Pipe Sierra first reported the agreement.
This season, Hinestroza, 22, has scored twice in 347 minutes played in 16 games. This winter, he came to Columbus through the U-22 program. There was a minute-long standoff because Columbus had already signed two attackers before the transfer window opened (more on that later).
The forward was previously successful with Vancouver.
Becher, 24, made his breakthrough with the Vancouver Whitecaps before spending this winter in Denmark. In 802 minutes with the Whitecaps, he recorded 8 goals and 2 assists.
A star at SLU from 2019 to 21, coming home to St. Louis City would feel like a homecoming. After being chosen by Vancouver in the first round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, Becher advanced through their second team to be awarded an MLS contract.
Marcucci will join on loan for the remainder of the season.
The 24-year-old Marcucci will continue improving his skills overseas. Since being chosen in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, he has advanced through the Red Bulls system and made 54 appearances for the team’s reserve squad.
With Frankie Amaya moving to Toluca, the Red Bulls are trying to sign a central midfield player.
Vancouver is attempting to strengthen its right flank.
Talks are ongoing, but more needs to be decided upon or done thus far.
Ocampo, 20, has already played for Nacional in 57 first-team games.
A few previously unreported signings have become official since the transfer window opened on Thursday:
Sam Adeniran was acquired by Philadelphia Union for $150,000 GAM in addition to an additional $150k GAM in add-ons from St. Louis. The physical forward, who has been linked to Philly for most of the season, officially joins the team.
Winger Benji Michel was signed by Real Salt Lake. The 26-year-old Michel spent most of his MLS career with Orlando City and was a free agent.
After winning four league titles with Ferencvárosi in Hungary, defender Henry Wingo signed a free-agent contract with Toronto FC. He will be used by the team in their back three as a right-sided center-back, a position he flourished in with Ferencvárosi last season.
