The French giants are anticipated to sign several world-class players as the transfer window closes
As the 2024–25 season draws near, Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have begun their summer pre-season preparations. They aim to add multiple trophies to their collection in the upcoming campaign. PSG’s focus is not just on defending their domestic titles but also on significantly impacting the European stage.
In the 2023-24 season, PSG secured their 12th Ligue 1 title, along with victories in the Coupe de France and the French Super Cup. However, their pursuit of UEFA Champions League glory was cut short once again, as they were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the semifinals. Despite heavy investment in recent transfer windows, PSG needs help asserting their dominance in European competitions.
This summer, PSG adopted a more measured approach to the transfer market as they navigated a new chapter following Kylian Mbappe’s departure. So far, their only acquisition is Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, who joined from FC Krasnodar on a five-year deal. Safonov, who kept 11 clean sheets in 30 appearances last season, is expected to serve as a backup to Gianluigi Donnarumma. Additionally, PSG is set to finalize the high-profile signing of Portuguese midfielder João Neves from Benfica for a reported €70 million and remains in talks with Napoli over star striker Victor Osimhen.
At the start of the transfer window, 13 players returned to PSG after loan spells at various clubs. Meanwhile, the club has also offloaded several players to create space for new arrivals as it continues to reshape its squad.
The most notable departure so far is Kylian Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer following the expiration of his PSG contract. Additionally, Hugo Ekitiké completed a permanent move to Eintracht Frankfurt after a successful loan spell. Other departures include Edouard Michut, who joined Adana Demirspor on a free transfer, and Noha Lemina, who moved to FC Annecy. Veteran players like Layvin Kurzawa, Keylor Navas, Sergio Rico, and Alexandre Letellier left the club as free agents.
PSG’s rebuild is far from complete, and further transfers both incoming and outgoing are expected as the summer transfer window progresses. The French giants are focused on bolstering their squad for the challenges ahead.
The Dutch midfielder still has two years remaining on his contract with the Spanish club
Despite ongoing discussions to strengthen their squad this summer, Barcelona has yet to make any signings. However, a key priority for the club is offloading players to generate much-needed revenue. Frenkie de Jong remains a frequent name in transfer rumors as the club looks to capitalize on his value.
New reports suggest that the club is increasingly desperate to offload the midfielder. Still, his substantial wages could pose a significant hurdle in securing a transfer to another team.
The Dutchman is currently earning a substantial salary at Barcelona, and the club has been eager to remove his wages from its financial books.
Barcelona has been open about wanting to sell Frenkie de Jong for some time. Still, the midfielder has consistently resisted a move. In 2022, the club was prepared to offload him, with Manchester United showing strong interest. Yet, de Jong had no intention of leaving and opted to stay at Barcelona.
Since arriving at the club, de Jong’s time in Spain has been inconsistent. The midfielder has frequently been the center of transfer rumors, yet he has remained steadfast in his desire to stay. Despite his loyalty, he has often faced criticism from fans during matches.
Barcelona may attempt to sell de Jong again, with Manchester United consistently eager to seize the opportunity to sign him. However, the final decision will ultimately rest with the midfielder, making his stance crucial to any potential move.
The former Ajax star has two years remaining on his contract. Barcelona will be keen to avoid losing such a valuable asset for nothing. This could push the club to once again attempt to force his departure this summer.
The 27-year-old midfielder has consistently attracted interest from top clubs, with Bayern Munich and Chelsea among those previously keen on securing his signature.
Meanwhile, Barcelona will secure a few signings before the transfer window closes. However, the club’s transfer strategy has appeared disjointed so far. Suppose they need to bring in new talent. In that case, they may again rely heavily on their academy players for the upcoming season.
