Despite Brighton & Hove Albion having already placed a bid during the early stages of the summer transfer window, West Ham United has inquired about Diego Gomez’s availability and may try to entice the Inter Miami star to the London Stadium, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.
After sealing a promising £25 million deal with Palmeiras earlier this month, Brazilian teenager Luis Guilherme became the first signing for the Hammers under the leadership of head coach Julen Lopetegui. Technical director Tim Steidten has also bolstered the goalkeeping department, signaling a potential successful recruitment drive.
Wes Foderingham has signed a two-year contract and will officially join West Ham when his Sheffield United contract expires in the coming days. The club has also made arrangements to bring in more new players to the capital before the team’s first match against Aston Villa, demonstrating a well-thought-out transfer strategy.
After a formal offer, East Londoners are thinking about moving.
According to GMS sources, West Ham has entered talks with a number of suitors regarding a possible summer move for Gomez. However, they face a significant challenge as their transfer target is eager to join Premier League rival Brighton after formally expressing interest with a bid, potentially shaking up the league dynamics.
After contributing four goals in 636 minutes of play during the 2024 Major League Soccer season, the central midfielder has drawn the attention of multiple clubs. He has teamed up with World Cup winner Lionel Messi to lead Inter Miami to victory, and they currently lead the Eastern Conference.
According to GMS sources, Brighton’s initial offer was much lower than Gomez’s asking price. West Ham is one of the teams that could try to make money as they prepare backup plans in case star Lucas Paqueta needs to miss a significant amount of time due to a Football Association-led betting investigation.
Diego Gomez | Lucas Paqueta | |
Pass completion percentage | 79.7 | 73.9 |
Shots on target percentage | 66.7 | 20.0 |
Tackles | 4.43 | 2.44 |
Shot-creating actions | 3.57 | 3.26 |
Goals | 0.29 | 0.14 |
Though former England captain David Beckham is president and co-owner of Inter Miami, who is expected to reject Brighton’s proposal, negotiations are still taking place regarding a possible move to the Amex Stadium as the south coast team prepares for Fabian Hurzeler’s first season in charge. Beckham’s influence in these negotiations is significant, and his stance could potentially sway the outcome in favor of West Ham.
Pundit Matt Doyle has praised Gomez’s performances thus far in the Major League Soccer season, calling him “excellent.” West Ham is keeping an eye on Gomez’s circumstances to ensure that Guilherme and Foderingham aren’t the only additions to the team this summer.
Brighton is far from a switch to a rubber stamp.
According to GMS sources, Inter Miami requests nearly £20 million for Gomez. Meanwhile, domestic rivals Brighton are nowhere near reaching a deal, which is encouraging for West Ham manager Lopetegui, even though the Paraguayan wants to take on a new challenge with the Seagulls.
The 21-year-old’s contract does not expire until the end of 2026, so the 2023 League Cup winners are eager to keep him. They are also willing to play hardball because they have learned that some of his admirers are debating whether or not to approach the negotiators.
Widespread interest has allowed Inter Miami to stick to its valuation rather than give in and lower its demands. Another offer before they could table a fresh bid range window closes on August League teams.
The South American striker is among many names on West Ham’s shortlist because the Florida-based team also seeks a striker. According to GMS sources, Chelsea outcast Romelu Lukaku has been identified as a potential replacement for Lille striker Jonathan David.
