For years, Kawasaki Frontale stood as the pinnacle of the J.League, boasting four J1 titles in six years and an impressive collection of domestic cups.
Their dominance established them as a powerhouse in Japanese football and garnered a loyal following that celebrated their triumphs. However, this era of supremacy waned last season, culminating in a disappointing eighth-place finish that fell short of the club’s high standards.
As the dust settles, it is time to reflect on the challenges faced in 2023 and anticipate what 2024 may hold for Kawasaki as it strives to reclaim its former glory.
Frontale struggled to find their footing throughout the last season, only climbing up to seventh place in the standings.
This stagnation starkly contrasted their previous performances, as the long-standing trend of their top players departing for European leagues finally took its toll.
The club grappled with the challenge of effectively replacing this departing talent, leading to a mid-table finish that left fans and management alike disheartened.
Despite these league challenges, Frontale did orchestrate a remarkable run in the Emperor’s Cup, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Their journey culminated in a thrilling penalty shootout victory in the final. This marked the second time in the club’s history that they captured Japan’s oldest competition, providing a silver lining to an otherwise difficult season.
Miki Yamane played a pivotal role in Frontale’s past successes, contributing significantly to numerous trophy wins in Kawasaki and earning a place in the J.League Best Eleven three times.
His versatility as a solid defender and his ability to drive forward made him a vital asset for the team. Beyond his on-field contributions, Yamane provided the calm leadership that helped establish Frontale as one of the nation’s elite teams.
Unfortunately, as many key figures have departed in recent seasons, Yamane has become the latest casualty of this trend, transferring to LA Galaxy in the USA this winter. His departure will undoubtedly leave a gap in the defensive line and the team’s overall dynamic.
One of the significant challenges Frontale faced last season was the glaring absence of a reliable center forward. Leandro Damião celebrated as the 2021 J.League MVP, struggled with injuries throughout the year, and could not find his form, ultimately deciding to return to Brazil to play for Coritiba.
Acknowledging the urgent need for a star striker to lead the attack, Frontale turned to Brazil and acquired Ericson. At just 24 years old, Erison is on the cusp of entering his prime and has already showcased his considerable skills with several top Brazilian clubs, including Botafogo and São Paulo.
Suppose he can seamlessly integrate into the squad and establish himself as the focal point of the attack. In that case, Kawasaki may rediscover the goal-scoring prowess that previously defined their success.
Following a challenging year filled with ups and downs, Kawasaki must set their sights firmly on reestablishing themselves among the J1 elite.
More than simply improving upon last season’s eighth-place finish will be necessary at a club where manager Toru Oniki has established lofty expectations for success. Frontale supporters are accustomed to vying for titles and competing at the highest levels, and with a fully fit squad, there is every reason to believe they can aim for that ambition in 2024.
Alongside the strategic signing of Erison to spearhead the attack, they have also brought in compatriots Zé Ricardo and Patrick Verhon to bolster both the defensive line and attacking midfield, respectively.
Additionally, a key signing in the midfield could be Yuki Yamamoto, a proven playmaker from Gamba Osaka, known for his exceptional passing ability and vision on the pitch.
This infusion of fresh talent into a Frontale squad that still retains seasoned veterans like Akihiro Ienaga and Yasuto Wakizaka, alongside the dynamic attacking capabilities of Marcinho and Bafétimbi Gomis, hints at a lineup that could be formidable in the coming season.
In summary, this squad is talented and possesses remarkable depth; they likely performed better offensively than their record indicated last season, and defensive improvements are anticipated with better injury luck on the horizon.
With Oniki’s tactical acumen at the helm, Frontale has the potential to challenge for the title once again—provided they can develop cohesion as a unit and navigate the season with fewer injury setbacks.
