This week, a notable change in the defensive hierarchy at Barcelona has come to light.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the update pertains to the club’s left-back positions.
It has been widely anticipated in Barcelona that Alejandro Balde will once again be the first-choice left-back for the upcoming season.
This development comes as the Spaniard returns to full fitness after an extended injury layoff.
With Héctor Fort expected to resume his preferred position on the right, it was initially assumed that Álex Valle, who spent last season on loan with Levante, would serve as Balde’s backup.
However, this plan has recently changed.
According to Mundo Deportivo, a new contender has surpassed Valle in the hierarchy for Barcelona’s full-back position.
Is the player now in question? Gerard Martín.
Stopper Martín, who spent last season plying his trade with Barca Atlètic, is said to have turned the heads of Hansi Flick and his coaching staff, owing to his combination of ‘physical strength, defensive ability, development and progression on an offensive level’.
These qualities were prominently displayed in the match against Manchester City earlier this week, with MD concluding that:
‘Right now, he is ahead of Álex Valle.’
