Kylian Mbappé scored twice to lead Real Madrid to a 2-0 victory over Real Betis, marking his first La Liga goal since joining PSG this summer. The 25-year-old had already opened his account for Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup win against Atalanta. This result pushes Carlo Ancelotti’s team to second place in La Liga with eight points, four behind Barcelona, who top the table after four games.
Mbappé broke his La Liga drought with two goals in the second half, netting both in eight minutes. He opened the scoring by finishing off a slick assist from Federico Valverde before converting a penalty after Betis goalkeeper Rui Silva fouled Vinícius Júnior. After a VAR review, the penalty was given that overturned an offside decision.
Vinícius was Madrid’s standout performer in the second half, nearly scoring with a deflected shot that struck the post. Betis, who started brightly in the first half, struggled to contain Madrid after the break and offered little in attack following Mbappé’s quick double.
Betis had an early chance through Abde Ezzalzouli, whose header went over the bar, while Madrid responded with Éder Militão testing Silva with a header. Mbappé missed some early opportunities, including firing wide from a Vinícius cutback. Still, Madrid only found their rhythm in the second half.
Ancelotti’s spirited halftime team talk energized Madrid. Vinícius hit the post just before Mbappé opened the scoring in the 67th minute. Silva brought down Vinícius shortly after, leading to the penalty that Mbappé calmly dispatched to secure all three points for Los Blancos.
After 24 shots in La Liga without a goal—eight on target, six off, and 10 blocked—Kylian Mbappé finally found the back of the net. For the first hour, it seemed like his goal drought might extend into the international break. Still, when his opportunity arrived, he stayed composed, slotting it past Silva. He then confidently added a second from the penalty spot. With these two strikes, Mbappé is officially in La Liga.
Although Vinícius impressed in the second half, Mbappé earned the top honors. He became just the fourth Real Madrid player in the 21st century to score his first two La Liga goals in a single match, joining Ronaldo Nazário, Javier Hernández, Dani Ceballos, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, the latter of whom scored a hat-trick on his La Liga debut.
10′ – Chance! Real Madrid 0-0 Real Betis (Ezzalzouli): Betis threaten early as Perraud delivers a pinpoint cross from the left. Ezzalzouli meets it with a header but fails to keep it down, sending the ball over the bar. A close call for Madrid!
20′ – Chance! Real Madrid 0-0 Real Betis (Militão): Madrid nearly takes the lead as Militão leaps to meet a corner, heading powerfully towards goal. Silva reacts with a strong save, and the rebound falls back to Militão, but he can only be seen when looking at the side netting closely.
50′ – Chance! Real Madrid 0-0 Real Betis (Vinícius): Inches away from a breakthrough! Vinícius’ shot from the edge of the box takes a nasty deflection, but Betis are saved by the right post. The rebound falls to Mbappé, who slices the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy—only for the offside flag to bail him out.
67′ – Goal! Real Madrid 1-0 Real Betis (Mbappé): The deadlock is broken! Rodrygo weaves his way through the Betis defense before feeding Valverde, who produces a brilliant flick to send Mbappé through. With perfect timing to stay onside, Mbappé beats his marker and slots an excellent first-time finish past Silva to put Madrid ahead.
75′ – Penalty! Real Madrid 1-0 Real Betis: After a VAR check, the referee reverses his initial offside call and awards Madrid a penalty for Silva’s foul on Vinícius. Mbappé steps up—can he double his tally?
75′ – Goal! Real Madrid 2-0 Real Betis (Mbappé): No mistake from Mbappé! He calmly sends the keeper the wrong way, placing his penalty slightly right of center. Madrid are 2-0 up, and Mbappé has his second La Liga goal of the night!.
