Kylian Mbappe and PSG’s €55 million dispute takes a new turn – La Liga

Paris Saint-Germain believes Kylian Mbappe has already waived bonus payments, so they have no plans to give him €55 million.

Mbappe and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of the current Ligue 1 champions, verbally agreed in August 2023 to forgo a €25 million signing-on fee and a €30 million loyalty bonus. He took this action to pay the club for his free transfer departure.

PSG claimed that Mbappe behaved in “bad faith” by signing a contract extension in 2022 and then taking a photo with the club’s shirt that said “2025” on the back. However, Mbappe did not complete the one-year extension and left on a free transfer to Real Madrid in 2024. Although Mbappe’s contract only guaranteed him two years, until the summer of 2024, PSG maintains that Mbappe knowingly misled the club for months to avoid activating the one-year option.

PSG excluded Mbappe from their 2023 preseason tour of Japan and South Korea and put him on the market for €180 million after realizing he did not intend to stay another year. However, after clearing the air, the parties reached a gentleman’s agreement, to which Mbappe made repeated public references.

However, as soon as Mbappe formally left PSG on June 30, 2024, he filed a claim with the Ligue de Football Professionals’s (LFP) Legal Commission, demanding payment of the entire €55 million.

The LFP offered Mbappe the chance to mediate, which PSG interpreted as support for their claims, but the French forward turned down the offer. Due to their limited authority, the LFP was required to order PSG to give Mbappe €55 million within eight days. This is so that they can decide whether or not there is an employment contract, which there is with Mbappe’s original terms since mediation is no longer an option.

Despite the non-binding nature of the LFP ruling, PSG has yet to commit to paying Mbappe within the next eight days and cannot be forced to do so. Mbappe has two options: he can approach PSG directly and attempt to reach a settlement right away or file a formal complaint with the Employment Tribunal.

“Having heard the parties’ arguments, the Commission repeatedly insisted upon mediation between Paris Saint-Germain and the player to find a compromise in light of PSG’s favorable arguments,” read a PSG statement. “This mediation process has been refused by the player, contrary to the Commission’s recommendation.”

“As such, and in light of the limitations of the Commission’s legal scope to take a complete decision on this matter, the matter must now be contested in another legal forum, to which Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to present all the facts over the coming months and year.”

“As a matter of law and fact, the player has made clear, repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having been afforded unprecedented benefits by the club over seven years in Paris – and the club looks forward to these being upheld in the proper forum, if the player seeks to pursue this incomprehensibly reputationally damaging matter further, in due course.”

Mbappe Is Set to Dispute Moral Abuse

PSG’s case will be heard by any Employment Tribunal, and witnesses such as Al-Khelaifi, head coach Luis Enrique, and sporting director Luis Campos will testify that Mbappe verbally consented to forego the €55 million payment.

As they have already done in court documents, the Mbappe camp will respond by accusing PSG of “moral harassment” and attempting to “extort” money from Mbappe, knowing full well that the player didn’t want to be cut from the PSG team.

Although Mbappe did not travel to Asia with the team for preseason, PSG made it evident that he would have always been selected based only on his athletic ability. Any club with a high-value asset on the market, as Mbappe did for a brief period in the summer of 2023, is customarily inclined to safeguard them by avoiding using them in exhibition matches.

Now, a settlement between the parties might require some time. The Employment Tribunal hearing may take more than two years to conclude, and even then, PSG and Mbappe may be advised to settle, leaving the 25-year-old in the same situation.

Mbappe must hope the Employment he’llnal finds that the original contract supersedes what PSG regards as a legally enforceable verbal agreement in order for him to receive his money.

Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain: PSG has no intention of paying Mbappe freely or within the next eight days. This suggests that, in spite of the LLFP’s Decision, which is far from a conclusion to what is turning out to be an ugly saga, there may be a protracted legal battle ahead.
