After three years in the position, Barcelona fired head coach Xavi, and Hansi Flick, a former manager of Germany and Bayern Munich, is expected to take over.

A month after Barcelona convinced Xavi to continue as manager despite his original plans to quit at the end of this season, the decision to fire him has been made.

According to Sky in Germany, Barcelona has verbally agreed to have Flick take over as coach. The Spanish team claims that they will reveal who will replace Xavi in the coming days.

A statement from the Catalan club read: “FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world.”

Barcelona, led by Xavi, will finish the season 12 points behind champion Real Madrid despite being in second place in the standings on Sunday, the last day of play.

Additionally, the Spaniard led the Catalans to the Champions League quarter finals, where they were defeated by Paris Saint-Germain.

All things considered, Xavi won the La Liga championship in 2023 and the Spanish Super Cup a few months later.

Xavi: Leaving the club of your life is always challenging

In an open letter posted on social media, Xavi acknowledged that it was difficult to leave, but he insisted that despite a challenging campaign, he was proud to have paved the way for the team’s future stars.

“It is never easy to leave the club of your life, but I am very proud after two and a half years at the head of a dressing room that has been like a second family,” Xavi wrote.

“From Sunday I will be another fan in the stands… Because before being a player or a coach I am a Barcelona fan and I only want the best for the club in my life, which will always have me at its disposal.

“This season things have not gone our way, but we have let it go and helped to grow a new generation of young footballers from La Masia who inspire all Barcelona fans… I wish the best for the club that I hold dear to my heart.”

Chief of Sevilla: To what extent do Barcelona mistreat their legends?

Quique Sanchez Flores, the manager of Sevilla, who will also be leaving the team following Sunday’s match against Barcelona, criticized the Catalan team for having a “bad streak” when it comes to keeping its legends at the club.

Flores cited recent examples of Barcelona’s mistreatment of its key players, including Lionel Messi and Ronald Koeman, as further evidence.

“Xavi is a coach who has cared a lot about the club. He has experienced many things as a player and has done a good job as a coach,” the previous manager of Watford stated.

“I’ll give him a huge hug, we’ll talk.

“I shouldn’t say this, but how badly Barcelona treats its legends. Koeman, Messi, with Xavi now… what a bad streak. I wish clubs would value their legends. That adds up.”

Which elite teams in Europe fired their manager?

At the end of this season, Barcelona is the most recent elite European club to fire their manager.

Chelsea is searching for a new head coach in the Premier League after firing Mauricio Pochettino this past week. Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United, who finished last in the English Premier League this season with their lowest-ever result, is also seriously in doubt.

Despite leading the team to its first-ever European campaign this season, Brighton also parted ways with Roberto De Zerbi earlier this month.

Another elite team searching for a manager is Bayern Munich, who informed Thomas Tuchel in January that he would not be retained. The German team’s current top choice is Burnley manager Vincent Kompany.

Stefano Pioli, the manager of AC Milan, is set to leave the team, and Paulo Fonseca, the former manager of Roma, is expected to take over as manager.

Massimiliano Allegri was also fired by Juventus last week due to the Italian manager’s actions following the team’s Coppa Italia victory over Atalanta. Thiago Motta, who will depart third-place Bologna next week, is expected to take his place.

Additionally, Ajax has reinstated Nice manager Francesco Farioli in place of interim manager John can’t Schip, who departed the French team.
