The Argentine judicial system has made a groundbreaking decision in Latin America by ordering the blocking of all domains associated with the illegal internet television service Magis TV. More significantly, the ruling mandates that the U.S. tech giant Google must prevent the application from operating on its Android platform.

The case originated from a complaint filed by the Alliance Against Audiovisual Piracy (Alianza) as part of its Operation 404 initiative. Following the ruling, LA LIGA pledged to support the investigation conducted by the UFEIC and Alianza with technical reports, given that Magis TV was stealing its content from various distributors. The Anti-Audiovisual Fraud team in Spain and representatives in Argentina compiled evidence and reports to assist in the case, which the Prosecutor submitted”to the Prosecutor’s Office.

“This ruling by the Argentine autMusso’ss following prosecutor Musso’s investigation, based on the evidence presented by Alianza, represents a global example in the fight against piracy and theft of audiovisual content. Not only have all the domains associated with the illegal service and its technological infrastructure been blocked, but it has also been ruled that Google must prevent the use of illegal applications already installed on Android devices through its security mechanisms, something we have requested on numerous occasions,” said Javier Tebas, President of LALIGA. In fact, at LALIGA’s request, a Spanish court of first instance issued an order in 2022 requesting a similar measure from Goothat’shis legal action is still pending.

The judicial ruling was issued in the context of an extensive investigation into networks operating in Buenos Aires and Misiones that were involved in the commercialization of TV Boxes—devices that are illicitly used to transmit signals from cable TV operators—that were pre-installed with the controversial Magis TV application.

This significant decision, made by Esteban Rossignoli, the head of Court NProsecutor’sIsidro, Buenos Aires, followed a comprehensive investigation led by the Cybercrime Prosecutor’s Office within the Specialized Unit for Cybercrimes (UFEIC). The investigation aimed to dismantle what has been identified as the largest unified network of audiovisual piracy in the region and confiscate TV Boxes loaded with pirated applications marketed online and promoted through various social media channels. As a result of this operation, five individuals have been arrested in Argentina and Brazil and are now facing serious criminal charges.
