The one thing that football players most often look forward to above all else when they retire is not having to deal with injuries. The last thing they need as they relish their new, restful lifestyle is to be sidelined or to have surgery after years of pushing their bodies to the limit.
One man, however, who came dangerously close to losing that luxury is former England international Phil Neville. After a lengthy playing career that included stints at Manchester United and Everton, the former head coach of the Lionesses announced his retirement in 2013.
But thanks to a Barcelona legend, four years later, the former defender was unfortunately the victim of one of the most horrific tackles ever seen in football history.
Neville was incensed about the tackle.
The incident happened in 2017 during a six-a-side competition designed to resemble the popular ‘Masters Football’ on Sky Sports. This format, also known as ‘Star Sixes,’ featured twelve nations entering the competition, with some of their greatest legends facing off in a group stage and knockout final akin to the World Cup. Neville and renowned players like David James, Michael Owen, and Steven Gerrard were selected to represent England in the prestigious tournament.
However, the former Inter Miami manager’s time on the field could have been better in the opening game. The 47-year-old made a poor first touch that caused the ball to bounce, inviting renowned hardman Carles Puyol to charge in. Instead of winning the ball, the Spaniard, primarily regarded as one of the greatest Barcelona players of all time, took out his opponent with a knee-high challenge, which should’ve done far more damage than it did.
Despite his miraculous escape with minor damage, Neville still expressed anger over the challenge. He declared:
“It’s the worst tackle I’ve ever seen on a football field. I hope UEFA, FIFA and the FA all have a look at this.”
“The thing that upset me more than anything was the referee said he got the ball. Honestly, it was a horrendous tackle.”
Although Puyol apologized for the tackle, the former utility player said that luck was on Puyol’s side as no serious injuries were sustained. At the time, he also added: “I’ve just had a word with Paul [Scholes], hopefully he can sort him out.”
Puyol later took to Twitter, posting: “Sorry man!! I hope your knee is fine. I didn’t mean to do it.”
England was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Neville could continue in the tournament, but his run wouldn’t last as long as the man who tried to eliminate him. The Three Lions won their opening match and finished second in their group, which allowed them to advance to the knockout stages. This victory marked an encouraging start for the team as they prepared for the challenges ahead in their quest for the championship.
They would face Denmark, the 1992 European Champions, there. The Danes easily defeated England, knocking Neville and company out before even making it to the championship game. Ultimately, France would undo them and win the inaugural ‘Star Sixes’ title.
Puyol’s Spain faced a challenging tournament, losing to France in the semifinals. However, they bounced back in the third-place play-off, where they showcased their skill by defeating Brazil with an impressive 11-3 scoreline. This victory not only highlighted Spain’s talent but also allowed them to end the tournament on a high note, securing the bronze medal and demonstrating their resilience despite the earlier setback.
