Japan is gearing up for two pivotal qualifying matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and head coach Hajime Moriyasu has once again put together a squad featuring players exclusively connected to the J.League, encompassing current talents and former stars.

The strategic decision to feature J.League players in the squad underscores Moriyasu’s confidence in the homegrown talent. The highly anticipated match against North Korea at the Japan National Stadium on March 21 is sure to be a thrilling event for football fans.

These matches are not just games, they are stepping stones towards Japan’s goal of securing a spot in the upcoming World Cup. The home game against North Korea is expected to draw significant support from local fans, creating an electric atmosphere. The team’s resilience and adaptability will be tested in the away match in Pyongyang, making these matches a focal point in their campaign.

The Samurai Blue squad boasts a remarkable lineup that includes six active players from the J-League, highlighting the league’s significance in nurturing homegrown talent. Leading this impressive group is the veteran defender Yuto Nagatomo, who, at 37 years old, continues to defy age with his remarkable performances. Nagatomo, who plays for FC Tokyo, showcased his exceptional skills last weekend by scoring a stunning goal that thrilled fans and demonstrated his enduring prowess on the field. His extensive experience is invaluable to the team, as he brings a wealth of knowledge from his storied career, which includes an impressive 142 international caps representing Japan. This combination of youth and experience within the Samurai Blue is crucial as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

Additionally, Cerezo Osaka’s Seiya Maikuma returns to the lineup after playing a pivotal role in Japan’s AFC Asian Cup campaign in January. He is anticipated to play right back during these crucial qualifiers.

Two promising young midfielders have earned their place on the squad, reflecting the national team’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent. Kaishu Sano, representing Kashima Antlers, has been showcasing his impressive development on the pitch. His recent performances highlight his technical skills and tactical awareness, making him a valuable asset to the Samurai Blue as they prepare for their upcoming qualifiers. Meanwhile, Takumu Kawamura, hailing from Sanfrecce Hiroshima, is on the brink of potentially making his competitive debut against North Korea. Kawamura had previously earned his first cap in a friendly match earlier this year, and the coaching staff appears confident in his abilities to contribute to the team’s efforts. His inclusion in the squad is a testament to the faith the coaching staff has in young talent to make an impact on the international stage. Together, these players represent the future of Japanese football, bringing energy and creativity to the midfield.

They complete the lineup for the current J. League players: Sanfrecce’s Keisuke Osako and Daiya Maekawa from Vissel Kobe. Both players are vying for the opportunity to establish themselves as Japan’s starting goalkeeper, a position that remains uncertain now.

Alongside the players representing Japanese clubs, the roster includes 20 athletes who began their professional careers in the J.League before taking their talents overseas.

Liverpool’s Wataru Endo, who previously played for Shonan Bellmare and Urawa Reds, returns as Japan’s captain, leading the squad with experience and determination. He is joined by Takumi Minamino, a product of Cerezo Osaka and now a star at AS Monaco, who also brings significant international experience to the team. Additionally, Ayase Ueda, a former Kashima Antlers player and the top scorer for Japan during the Asian Cup with four goals, is back to strengthen the attacking front.

The Samurai Blue sits atop Group B in the second round of AFC qualifying with six points, having secured victories against Syria and Myanmar. If they defeat North Korea twice, they could secure their place in the next qualifying round before their final two matches in June.
