This year’s edition features a remarkable increase in the number of clubs participating as it transitions into a knockout format to take the competition to unprecedented levels. By introducing this dynamic structure, the organizers hope to create a more captivating experience for fans and players alike, fostering an atmosphere of intense rivalry and showcasing the best talent across all levels of Japanese football.
In a groundbreaking move, this season sees the inclusion of every team from the Meiji Yasuda J2 and J3 leagues, which has resulted in a historic 60-team tournament. This means that all clubs from Japan’s top three divisions are now granted the chance to compete for the prestigious Levain Cup trophy, giving them a unique opportunity to shine on a larger stage. The expanded format highlights the depth and talent within Japanese football and ensures a series of thrilling matches filled with excitement and unpredictability. As the tournament unfolds, fans can expect heightened drama and memorable moments, making the Levain Cup more significant and engaging than it has ever been before.
We have now progressed to Round 2 of the tournament, showcasing 40 clubs competing for glory. This round comprises the 17 victorious teams that emerged triumphant in Round 1 and an additional 23 clubs entering the fray, each eager to make their mark in the competition as they chase the prestigious cup. Including these teams enhances the competitive landscape and heightens the excitement surrounding the tournament, as each club seeks to prove itself and advance further in its quest for success. With high aspirations, Round 2 promises to deliver thrilling matchups and unforgettable moments as the clubs battle it out.
The 20 teams that achieve victory in these matchups will advance to Round 3, where they will engage in fierce competition to determine the 10 group champions. In this pivotal round, fans can expect intense battles on the pitch as each team pulls out all the stops in their quest for success. The stakes will be high, with every club striving to outdo the others and secure their place in the tournament’s next stage. The atmosphere will be electric as players leave everything on the field, knowing their performance will be crucial in determining their progression. With each match carrying significant weight, the determination and skill of these teams will be on full display as they aim to claim their spot among the elite in the competition.
Following this, the remaining clubs will go head-to-head in the Playoff Round, featuring five home-and-away matchups that add excitement and strategy to the competition. This format is specifically designed to narrow the field down to just five teams, each vying for a coveted spot in the subsequent stages of the tournament.
The five teams that emerge victorious from the Playoff Round will progress to the Prime Stage of the tournament. In this crucial phase, they will be joined by Japan’s three representatives competing in the AFC Champions League knockout stage for the 2023/24 season: Yokohama F. Marinos, Kawasaki Frontale, and Ventforet Kofu. Together, these eight clubs will face off in the quarter-finals, creating an exciting and highly competitive atmosphere as each team aims for glory.
The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be two-legged matches, which means each matchup will consist of two games—one hosted by each team. This format adds a layer of strategy and excitement, as teams must perform well in home and away fixtures to advance. Ultimately, these thrilling encounters will set the stage for the final 32nd annual edition of the J.League Cup, where the champions will be crowned.
