The Japanese men’s football team made a commanding start to their Olympics campaign, securing a resounding 5-0 victory over Paraguay in their opening Group D match. The U-23 squad, composed mainly of promising talents from the Meiji Yasuda J.League, showcased their potential on the international stage with a dominant performance.
From the outset, Japan asserted their authority on the game, with Albirex Niigata’s Shunsuke Mito breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute following an assist from Urawa Reds’ Ayumu Ohata. Paraguay’s prospects dimmed further as Wilder Viera was sent off for a reckless tackle, leaving the South American side a man down.
Despite creating several chances, Japan had to wait until the second half to extend their lead. Mito doubled his tally after a brilliant play by former Yokohama FC player Koki Saito before Tokyo Verdy and Gamba Osaka alumnus Rihito Yamamoto struck a powerful long-range effort to make it 3-0.
In the closing stages, FC Machida Zelvia standout Shota Fujio came off the bench to score a brace, first assisted by FC Tokyo’s Ryotaro Araki (on loan from Kashima Antlers) With the assistance of Kashiwa Reysol’s talented forward, Mao Hosoya, the team’s offensive capabilities have significantly improved.
With this impressive victory, Japan tops Group D after the first round of fixtures. The Samurai Blue will look to build on their strong start when they face Mali on Matchday 2, as they aim to progress to the tournament’s knockout stages.
