Legendary Japanese footballer Shinzo Koroki has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2024 season. This will end a remarkable career that has seen him become one of the greatest players in the history of the Meiji Yasuda League.
Koroki’s impact on the league cannot be overstated. His 524 appearances rank eighth in J1 history, and his 168 goals are the second-most of all time. Notably, he is the only player to have scored in 18 consecutive J1 campaigns, a testament to his consistency and longevity.
Beginning his professional career in 2005 with Kashima Antlers, Koroki quickly became a key player in one of the league’s most dominant teams, helping Kashima secure three consecutive J1 titles. Additionally, he won the Emperor’s Cup twice and the J.League Cup once during his time with the club, as well as making his debut for the Japan National Team.
In 2013, Koroki joined Urawa Reds, where his career truly flourished. Demonstrating consistent top performance, he achieved double-digit goals in each of his first eight seasons with the club. His outstanding talent and skill were recognized in 2017 when he earned a well-deserved spot on the prestigious J.League Best XI team. With Urawa, Koroki lifted the Emperor’s Cup and J.League YBC Levain Cup while establishing himself as a continental force.
Koroki was instrumental in Urawa’s 2017 AFC Champions League triumph, scoring four times on the way to the title. In 2019, he continued his impressive form with eight goals as the Reds finally reached the final. His contributions led Urawa to an unprecedented third Asian crown in 2022, as he scored a crucial goal in the final’s first leg.
Throughout his illustrious career, Koroki has amassed an enviable silverware collection, including two AFC Champions League championships, three J1 titles, four Emperor’s Cups, and three J.League Cups. His dedication and talent have earned him a place among the J.League’s most celebrated players.
As the 2024 season unfolds, fans and players alike eagerly anticipate Koroki’s final matches, where they will bid farewell to a genuine footballing icon. His remarkable 20-year journey has left an indelible mark on the sport, inspiring countless fans and aspiring players. Shinzo Koroki will undoubtedly be remembered as a legend, and his retirement will signal the end of an era for Japanese football.
Mitchell Langerak’s recent announcement about leaving Nagoya Grampus after the 2024 J.League season marks the end of a spectacular seven-year journey for the Australian goalkeeper with the Japanese club. When Nagoya signed Langerak back in January 2018, the football world took notice, considering his remarkable achievements in Europe, which included two Bundesliga titles at Borussia Dortmund, promotion to the Germany’s top-tier Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart, and further showcased his talents in Spain’s premier LaLiga division during his time with Levante.
Langerak lived up to the hype and quickly established himself as one of the J.League’s best goalkeepers. His arrival significantly bolstered Nagoya’s defense and cemented their status as a top-flight club following their 2018 promotion. Over the years, Langerak continued to build his reputation as a top-class goalkeeper, leading J1’s best defense in 2020 and earning J.League Best XI honors with 17 clean sheets and a third-place finish for Nagoya in the league table.
The 2021 season saw Langerak reach new heights, propelling Nagoya Grampus to the AFC Champions League quarter-finals and lifting the coveted J.League YBC Levain Cup. He broke numerous records in the league, including the most minutes without conceding a goal (823) and the most shutouts in a single J1 campaign (21).
As the 2024 season approaches its conclusion, Mitchell Langerak will be looking to add to his already impressive legacy at Nagoya Grampus. With the club aiming for a strong finish in the upper half of the league table, Langerak will undoubtedly be a key figure as he brings his remarkable tenure with one of Japan’s most prestigious football clubs to a close.
Throughout his time in Japan, Langerak has consistently demonstrated his world-class abilities between the posts and has become a beloved figure among Nagoya’s passionate fan base.
While the news of his departure may disappoint many, the Australian shot-stopper’s contributions to the team will be remembered with gratitude and admiration. As Langerak embarks on new challenges in the future, his impact on Nagoya Grampus and the J.League World Champion will remain a memorable part of the club’s storied history.
