Newcastle United dazzled a lively crowd at Saitama Stadium 2002 with a convincing 4-1 victory over Urawa Reds in the J.League International Series 2024, powered by Footballnews.com. The evening was filled with thrilling football, and the Magpies wasted no time asserting dominance.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring in just the third minute with a spectacular solo effort. The Swedish international skillfully dribbled past several Urawa defenders, momentarily lost possession, quickly regained control, and fired a strong shot from 20 yards away that found the back of the net.
The Newcastle fans, who were in full voice throughout the match, erupted joyfully at Isak’s stunning goal, creating an electric atmosphere at Saitama Stadium. Their jubilation was a testament to the intense competition on the field.
However, Urawa Reds responded swiftly, with Rio Nitta equalizing in the 23rd minute. Yusuke Matsuo made a surging run down the left flank and delivered a pinpoint cross to Nitta, who coolly redirected the ball into the net, igniting celebrations among the home crowd.
The Reds maintained their momentum and almost took the lead when Hirokazu Ishihara earned a penalty after a skillful run resulted in a foul. With a golden chance to advance, the Reds saw their hopes dashed as Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, made a spectacular diving save to keep the match level.
Urawa kept pressing, and Nitta had another opportunity after stealing the ball from a defender. Still, Pope again came to Newcastle’s rescue with another excellent save. Meanwhile, Urawa’s goalkeeper, Ayumi Niekawa, had his moment of brilliance, leaping high to deny Alexander Isak his second goal of the night, showcasing both keepers’ quality in the first half.
Newcastle regained the lead just before halftime through a well-coordinated play between Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy. Willock forced a turnover and slipped past a defender before setting up Murphy for a composed finish, giving Newcastle a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Urawa did not lose hope and came close to reducing the margin when Ryoma Watanabe unleashed a powerful shot, only for Pope to make another crucial save. This display of resilience from the Reds was a testament to their determination and fighting spirit.
Newcastle extended their lead in the 58th minute with a long-range strike from Lewis Hall, which deflected into the net, sealing the victory.
Although Urawa fans didn’t witness another goal from their team, they had a special moment to cheer. Forward Shinzo Koroki, who announced his retirement at the end of the 2024 J.League season, turned 38 on matchday. Fans across the stadium gave him a standing ovation. This gesture highlighted the Reds’ respect for the game and its players, creating a memorable moment despite the result.
Ultimately, it was Newcastle’s night. They showcased their clinical finishing and solid defense, much to the delight of their traveling supporters. Reds fans, while disappointed, knew that if not for Pope’s heroics, the scoreline might have been different.

Mitchell Langerak has announced his departure from Nagoya Grampus at the end of the 2024 J.League season, concluding a remarkable seven-year tenure with the club. The Australian goalkeeper joined Nagoya in January 2018 with a strong pedigree, having been part of two Bundesliga-winning teams at Borussia Dortmund, assisting VfB Stuttgart’s promotion to the Bundesliga, and playing in LaLiga with Levante. His arrival in Japan was met with high expectations, and Langerak has undoubtedly lived up to them.
From the moment he joined, Langerak proved to be one of the J.League’s standout goalkeepers, pivotal in solidifying Nagoya Grampus as a competitive top-flight team. His performances peaked in 2020 when he anchored the best defense in J1 League, earned a spot in the J.League Best XI, and achieved 17 clean sheets as Nagoya finished third in the league.
Langerak’s impressive form continued into the following season, as he led Nagoya to the AFC Champions League quarter-finals and secured the J.League YBC Levain Cup title. That year, he set several records, including the longest streak of minutes without conceding a goal (823) and the most shutouts in a single J1 season (21).
As he prepares to close out the 2024 season, Langerak aims to help Grampus climb further up the table, adding another chapter to his legacy at one of Japan’s most prestigious clubs.
