Avispa Fukuoka experienced an extraordinary journey in 2023, filled with memorable moments and significant achievements, and they are now enthusiastic about leveraging that success as they head into 2024. The club’s excitement is palpable as players and fans look forward to what lies ahead. However, before fully embracing the future, it is essential to pause and reflect on the highs and lows of the past season, acknowledging the challenges they overcame and the milestones they reached. This reflection honors their accomplishments and provides valuable insights that can inform their strategy moving
forward.
Avispa’s season began on a disappointing note, as they lost their opener, but they quickly bounced back, embarking on an impressive six-match unbeaten streak.
Their momentum continued to build during the summer when they achieved a stunning six-match winning streak, sparking dreams of their best-ever finish in J1 history.
Ultimately, they accomplished this goal by securing a commendable seventh place. However, the season’s crowning achievement was their triumph in the J.League YBC Levain Cup, which they won in a thrilling final against Urawa Reds at the National Stadium. This momentous victory marked the first major trophy in the club’s history, creating unforgettable memories for players and fans alike.
Yuya Yamagishi was a vital player for Avispa. He finished as the team’s top scorer with ten goals and contributed four assists, which tied for the most on the squad. His transfer to Nagoya Grampus leaves a significant void in the team’s attacking lineup.
Other noteworthy departures include Yosuke Ideguchi, who has joined the reigning champions Vissel Kobe, and Lukian, who will be heading to Shonan Bellmare.
Although Lukian struggled to find his best form in Fukuoka, he still contributed five goals and three assists over nearly 2,000 minutes of play, making his replacement challenging.
To address the loss of Ideguchi, Avispa has welcomed Daiki Matsuoka, a tenacious 22-year-old midfielder who can solidify their presence in the center of the pitch.
Matsuoka brings valuable experience, having made over 100 appearances in J1 during his stints with Sagan Tosu and Shimizu S-Pulse. Last season, he spent time on loan in Brazil with Grêmio Novorizontino in the second tier.
Matsuoka was part of the Japan team that secured a silver medal at the Asian Games. His participation in the upcoming AFC U-23 Asian Cup and, if eligible, the Olympics may affect his availability for Avispa this season. However, his talent makes any absences worthwhile for the club.
What comes next after achieving the best season in the club’s history? For the Wasps, it is all about continuing to dream big.
They aim to build on their 2023 successes and maintain their upward trajectory.
While it may be unrealistic to aim for the very top of the table, they were not far from securing fifth place last season, which could serve as an excellent target for improvement. Consolidation in the upper half of the J1 table is crucial for a club intent on competing for silverware.
This year presents significant challenges, especially with the daunting task of replacing Yamagishi, as the team scored only 37 goals last season. However, they will also receive an attacking boost with the addition of Nassim Ben Khalifa from Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Although Ben Khalifa struggled last season, a fresh environment could reignite his potential and provide the squad with a much-needed threat in the final third.
With other exciting signings, such as Yuto Iwasaki from Sagan Tosu, it is evident that Fukuoka is not resting on its laurels. Instead, it is actively seeking ways to enhance its squad while staying true to its unique identity.
