Albirex Niigata’s return to the Meiji Yasuda J1 League in 2023 was remarkable. After several seasons away from the top flight, where they faced the challenges of lower divisions, their performance upon re-entry not only showcased their talent but also rekindled the excitement and passion among their supporters.
The fans, who had long awaited this moment, filled the stands with renewed hope and enthusiasm, creating an electrifying atmosphere at each home match. As they look ahead to 2024, a mix of challenges and opportunities lies before them, prompting essential discussions about how they will navigate the increasingly competitive landscape of Japanese football in the coming year. With new teams entering the league and established clubs strengthening their rosters, Albirex must adapt and evolve to maintain their momentum and continue their upward trajectory.
The question remains: How will they build on their successes and address the areas that need improvement as they aim for even more outstanding achievements in the season ahead?
While most teams focus primarily on staying afloat in their first season after promotion, the Swans took a different approach that set them apart from their peers.
They kicked off the season with an impressive undefeated streak, securing points in their first four matches. This strong start laid the groundwork for a successful campaign, culminating in a remarkable nine-game unbeaten run towards the end of the season.
Their efforts resulted in a respectable 10th place in the standings, sending the rest of J1 a clear message that they were determined to thrive rather than survive.
Notably, they achieved this despite the departure of crucial player Ryotaro Ito, who left for Sint-Truiden in Belgium during the summer transfer window. Rather than faltering in his absence, the team excelled, leaning heavily on a formidable defense that allowed just six goals during their impressive unbeaten streak to conclude the season.
Shunsuke Mito emerged as one of Japan’s most promising young midfielders last season, quickly establishing himself as a vital asset for the team. His performance in J1 mirrored the brilliance he displayed in J2 the previous year—a remarkable accomplishment for a player just 21 years old.
His skill and versatility on the pitch drew the attention of clubs abroad, leading Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands to sign him over the winter transfer window. Mito’s departure leaves Albirex needing a new anchor for their midfield, as they will now have to find a suitable replacement to fill the significant void left by his absence.
In light of their young stars’ departures, Albirex actively sought attacking talent to strengthen their squad. They found a promising prospect in Yuji Ono, a player with significant potential. Niigata experienced firsthand Ono’s impact during their matches against Sagan Tosu last season, where he scored in both encounters.
Those two goals were part of nine he netted throughout 2023, highlighting his ability to find the back of the net. The club is hopeful that Ono can bring that same level of clinical finishing to their front line in 2024, providing the much-needed consistency and firepower that will be crucial for their offensive strategy.
The objective for 2024 is clear: Albirex aims to maintain a midtable position. Last season’s commendable 10th-place finish was awe-inspiring, especially in an 18-team league.
With the J1 expanding to 20 teams in 2024, achieving a similar standing would still be considered a significant success, especially given the loss of such valuable young talent.
Manager Rikizo Matsuhashi has built a solid foundation in Niigata, emphasizing steady progress following their promotion and triumphant return to J1. Suppose his squad can replicate or even improve upon last season’s results. In that case, it will undoubtedly be another campaign in which the fans can take immense pride, solidifying the club’s status in the league.
