FC Tokyo has been the sole top-flight representative from the capital for several years, but that dynamic is set to change this season.

The arrival of competition in the city means that Tokyo’s blue and red sides are ready to embrace the challenge.

Let’s explore what 2024 might bring for the club, but first, let’s recap last season.

2023 Review

During the previous campaign, FC Tokyo introduced a new visual identity, which served as a fitting symbol for the significant transformations occurring both off and on the pitch.

Although the team started strong, accumulating points in four of their first five matches, the well-respected Albert Puig ultimately stepped down after 17 games, paving the way for Peter Cklamovski to take over in the summer.

FC Tokyo finished in 11th place, rarely looking like they could escape the mid-table trap. Throughout the season, they appeared as two teams, depending on whether they played at home or away.

At home, FC Tokyo consistently performed well, averaging nearly two points per game. However, they struggled on the road, scoring only 11 goals and winning just three out of 17 away matches.

The team leaned heavily on a familiar core of players, with Diego Oliveira emerging as the standout star, leading the squad with 15 goals.

This impressive tally ranked him fourth in J1 and accounted for an astonishing 35.7% of the team’s total goals scored throughout the season.

Key Loss

One significant blow for FC Tokyo is the departure of Ryoma Watanabe to Urawa Reds.

The team will need to find new sources of production beyond Oliveira, and losing Watanabe, the reigning J1 Goal of the Year winner, makes that task even more challenging.

Watanabe contributed four goals and three assists last season, ranking second in both categories for FC Tokyo. This highlights the reliance on a few key players and reveals a lack of consistent attacking options within the squad.

Key Addition

Amid a host of potentially impactful signings this winter, Ryotaro Araki joins the team on loan from Kashima Antlers.

The 22-year-old was considered one of Japan’s top young talents and seemed poised for a breakout season in Ibaraki, but injuries over the past two seasons have hindered his progress.

Despite his setbacks, Araki has scored 22 goals for Kashima, and anyone familiar with his play knows he can be a dynamic creative force. If he remains fit, he has the potential to fill the void left by Watanabe’s departure, albeit from a different position on the field.

Goal for 2024

FC Tokyo’s minimum target this season should be a top-half finish, but the team should aim even higher.

The midseason transition to Cklamovski meant that last year would be challenging, but expectations should rise significantly after an entire preseason and a revamped squad.

The capital club will need its prominent players to step up and deliver results. Keita Endo demonstrated his quality at Yokohama F·Marinos before spending the last three years in Germany, while Tsuyoshi Ogashiwa brings a well-rounded attacking presence.

With Araki, FC Tokyo has amassed a wealth of attacking talent to support Diego Oliveira.

However, questions still need to be answered, particularly concerning how well the team’s youthful energy will hold up throughout the season. With teenagers like Kota Tawaratsumida dashing down the wings, 20-year-old Kuryu Matsuki orchestrating the midfield, and 21-year-old Taishi Brandon Nozawa guarding the goal, FC Tokyo is set to feature a significant amount of young talent in critical positions, logging substantial minutes in 2024.

If everything clicks, this youthful dynamism could make them one of the most exciting teams in the league. Conversely, it could also lead to growing pains if the team struggles to gel early on. Nevertheless, one thing is sure: FC Tokyo is entering a bold new era characterized by an exciting style of play and a captivating blend of emerging stars and seasoned veterans. Whether this combination leads to success or a repeat of last season’s challenges remains to be seen, but it will undoubtedly be fascinating to watch unfold.
