For Wolverhampton Wanderers, just two players have ever scored a hat-trick in the Premier League.
Since its inception in 1992, the Premier League has become the most popular football league. With its unmatched global audience, it’s become a coveted stage for top players worldwide who dream of competing in the English top flight. The club boasts some of the best talent in football, offering high levels of competition and exposure for players to showcase their skills.
While many players contribute goals to their teams, scoring a hat-trick sets players apart. It’s a rare feat that highlights a player’s brilliance and ability to impact the game significantly. Across Premier League history, some of the greatest players have delivered memorable hat-tricks. One of the most iconic is Manchester City’s all-time top scorer, Sergio Agüero, who scored 12 Premier League hat-tricks, cementing his legacy as one of the league’s best finishers.
Just two Wolverhampton Wanderers players have scored a hat-trick in the top division since the team’s 2018 return to the Premier League after winning the EFL Championship. This select group is a testament to how challenging and prestigious the achievement is, with these individuals forever marking their place in Wolves’ history. Wolves, known for their resilience and dynamic style of play, have often relied on a team effort, but these two hat-trick scorers have stood out in critical moments, etching their names in the club’s Premier League story.
A series of impressive performances have marked Wolves’ journey back to the Premier League, but scoring a hat-trick is a remarkable achievement that carries significant weight. By joining the Premier League hat-trick scorers ranks, these two players have set a benchmark for future Wolves and earned recognition among the league’s top talents. Their accomplishments are part of Wolves’ growing legacy in the modern era of English football, and they’ll be remembered as pivotal figures in the club’s Premier League narrative.
Diogo Jota, now a key player for Liverpool FC under Jürgen Klopp’s guidance, has become a standout figure in the Premier League. As of this season, Jota has netted eight goals for the Reds, who currently top the table with 51 points after 23 matches.
Before joining the Anfield giants, Jota made his mark at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Initially on loan from Atlético de Madrid, his impressive performances helped Wolves secure the Championship title and earn promotion to the Premier League. His move was made permanent soon after, marking the beginning of his rise to prominence.
In the 2018-19 season, Wolves’ first campaign back in the top tier, Jota made history. On 19 January 2019, during a home game against Leicester City, Jota scored Wolves’ first-ever Premier League hat-trick. This achievement also made him only the second Portuguese player to score a hat-trick in the English top flight, following the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo.
Although Portuguese stars like Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes have since joined that list, Jota’s milestone will always hold a special place in Wolves’ Premier League history.
Since Diogo Jota’s hat trick in 2019, no Wolves player had repeated the feat in the Premier League—until Matheus Cunha’s brilliance against Chelsea five years later. The Brazilian forward became only the second Wolves player to score a Premier League hat-trick and the first to achieve it away from home in the iconic setting of Stamford Bridge. While Jota’s hat-trick came at Molineux, Cunha etched his name in history on Chelsea’s turf.
Wearing the number 12 jersey for Wolves, Cunha has had an impressive season, with nine goals and six assists already under his belt. This is his first entire campaign in the Premier League following a permanent transfer in the summer after a successful six-month loan from Atlético de Madrid. Like Diogo Jota before him, Cunha also switched to Wolves from Los Colchoneros.
Cunha’s hat-trick helped Wolves defeat Mauricio Pochettino’s team in the league while also securing a 4-2 triumph over Chelsea. The Brazilian’s achievement is further highlighted by the fact that he became only the fourth player to score a Premier League hat-trick at Stamford Bridge against the West London club—a memorable milestone for both Cunha and Wolves in their Premier League journey.
