Sunderland Claim Top Spot as West Brom and Blackburn Stumble – EFL CHAMPIONSHIP

Sunderland capitalized on defeats for West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn to rise to the top of the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Derby County. Goals from Jobe Bellingham and Wilson Isidor, one in each half, secured the win. They maintained Régis Le Bris’s side’s perfect home record, making it four wins from four at the Stadium of Light.

West Brom, who started the day at the summit, were beaten 1-0 at home by Middlesbrough, with Hayden Hackney scoring the decisive goal in the 73rd minute. Meanwhile, Blackburn’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt as they suffered a heavy 3-0 loss at Coventry City. Goals from Jake Bidwell, Haji Wright, and Brandon Thomas-Asante, the latter scoring with six minutes remaining, sealed the three points for Coventry.

Burnley moved up to second after a 1-0 win over Plymouth, thanks to Josh Brownhill’s first-half penalty. The victory saw Scott Parker outwit former England teammate Wayne Rooney.

Elsewhere, Largie Ramazani’s second-half equalizer earned Leeds a 1-1 draw at Norwich, where Josh Sargent had given the hosts an early lead with a penalty after being fouled by Joe Rodon.

At the bottom of the table, Cardiff City finally broke their winless streak by defeating Millwall 1-0. Perry Ng scored Cardiff’s third goal of the season with a header from a corner.

Oxford United staged a comeback to draw 2-2 at Luton Town. Jordan Clark and Tom Krauss gave Luton a 2-0 lead before Tyler Goodrham scored a goal just before halftime. Ruben Rodrigues later equalized, and Luton finished with 10 men after substitute Liam Walsh was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Siriki Dembele.

In another result, Hull City earned a 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers. Cody Drameh, Christian Bile Bedia, and Liam Millar were on target for Hull. At the same time, Nicolas Madsen scored a consolation penalty for QPR.

West Brom Urges EFL to Investigate Fan’s Death at Sheffield Wednesday Match

West Bromwich Albion has formally requested the English Football League (EFL) to investigate the events surrounding the tragic death of a supporter during their Championship match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Mark Townsend, 57, passed away following a medical emergency in the stands. Several West Brom fans have expressed concerns about handling the incident, particularly the delay in providing medical assistance.

While Sheffield Wednesday is conducting its own investigation, West Brom has also contacted the EFL to raise its concerns. The club believes a coroner’s inquest may be necessary to clarify the exact circumstances of the tragedy.

Steve Townsend’s brother, Townsend, posted on X that his heart was “truly broken” by his brother’s passing and that it took the paramedics fifteen minutes to get to the top tier of the West Stand, where the away fans are positioned. “My son had to watch my brother pass away and lose an uncle, and is left with those memories, I have had to break the news to my parents and his wife,” Townsend wrote.

When emergency medical teams failed to arrive promptly, a West Brom supporter, a paramedic, went out of her way to revive Townsend. In addition, supporters lamented the absence of a readily available defibrillator and the officials’ lack of response to their requests to halt the game so that medical attention could be given more quickly.

A representative for the NHS trust Yorkshire Ambulance Service stated: “Medical cover for spectators at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is provided by a private company, and their staff were first on scene at this emergency. Yorkshire ambulance service is contracted by the club to provide medical cover for the players. A critical care paramedic and emergency ambulance were subsequently dispatched to the scene to assist with the incident.”

According to a Sheffield Wednesday representative: “The club continue to liaise with West Bromwich Albion and all relevant parties as we collectively establish the full circumstances regarding this tragic loss of life. We echo absolutely the request of West Bromwich Albion that Mr Townsend’s family are allowed to grieve privately.”

The team has confirmed that the West Brom championship game against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night will feature a tribute to Townsend. The team led by Carlos Corberán will wear black armbands, and fans are encouraged to join in on the 57th-minute round of applause.

The EFL announced that it had received the letter from West Brom and would collaborate with both teams to collect data and firsthand accounts. This procedure, it said, was standard following a tragedy of this nature.

As of Wednesday, an individual linked to an “abhorrent” social media post concerning Townsend’s demise has been banned for life. “The individual has been charged by the police and will face the full force of the law,” the club said.
