Johannes Hoff Thorup supported calls for the Championship to adopt VAR even though his Norwich City team won 3-2 at Derby thanks to two significant mistakes.
Borja Sainz scored a hat-trick, including two goals for which the ball was evidently out of play during the build-up. Paul Warne, the manager of the losing team, stated that he is still opposed to the video assistant referee system because it makes the game “more and more complicated,” but Thorup said the second tier “needs VAR.”
“I will not sit here and blame the referees, Saturday after Saturday – we just have to make sure we support them,” said the Norwich manager. “I come from a league in Denmark where there is VAR. I won’t attack referees, but I like the idea that we get as many decisions right as possible. That should be the aim going forward.”
The 86th-minute goal by substitute Anthony Musaba gave Sheffield Wednesday a thrilling 3-2 victory over West Brom, who are currently atop the table. Darnell Furlong’s own goal and a Josh Windass header were canceled out by second-half goals from Josh Maja and Alex Mowatt, allowing the Baggies to rally from a two-goal deficit. However, Musaba’s late goal put an end to their unbeaten start. It was the league’s first win on Wednesday since the first day of play.
Sunderland missed the opportunity to take the top spot after a 2-1 loss at Watford. Goals from Festy Ebosele and Tom Dele-Bashiru’s penalty secured the win for the hosts despite Wilson Isidor’s equalizer for Sunderland. They had four minutes of added time to salvage a point but couldn’t capitalize on several late corners.
Lewis Travis marked his 200th league start with a goal as Blackburn Rovers defeated 10-man QPR 2-0, keeping their unbeaten streak alive. The teams were evenly matched until Jonathan Varane was sent off for a reckless tackle just before halftime. In the second half, Travis’s deflected shot opened the scoring, followed by Danny Batth’s first goal for the club to seal the win.
Jayden Bogle scored his first goal for promotion contenders Leeds in a 3-0 win over struggling Coventry at Elland Road. Willy Gnonto started the scoring in the 16th minute, and Bogle found the net four minutes into the second half. Substitute Joel Piroe added a late third, with Leeds dominating the match. At the same time, Coventry managed only one win in their last seven Championship games.
Burnley’s quest for a third consecutive league victory ended in a goalless draw against Oxford at the Kassam Stadium. Clear opportunities were challenging for both teams to come by, with Burnley coming closest when Jamie Cumming saved Luca Koleosho’s effort early in the second half.
Sheffield United maintained their unbeaten start to the season, extending their clean sheet run to a month with a 0-0 draw against winless Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Pompey’s goalkeeper, Will Norris, made four crucial saves, including a stunning stop to deny Gustavo Hamer.
Liverpool teenager Ben Doak scored his first goal on loan at Middlesbrough, leading them to a 2-0 victory over Stoke at the Riverside Stadium. Doak netted in the 34th minute despite offside claims, and Hayden Hackney sealed the win with a brilliant 20-yard strike.
Managerless Cardiff remains winless and bottom of the table after a 4-1 defeat at Hull. The Bluebirds initially took the lead with a goal from Callum Robinson but collapsed after that. Bachir Belloumi equalized and added a second before Oscar Zambrano’s deflected shot and Chris Bedia’s late penalty completed the rout.
Macaulay Langstaff scored his first goal for Millwall in a solid 3-1 victory over Preston. After George Honeyman opened the scoring, Romain Esse added another for the Lions. Aidomo Emakhu received a late red card, and Jordan Storey scored a consolation for North End.
Wayne Rooney hailed Plymouth Argyle’s “togetherness” following the team’s Friday night 3-1 victory over Luton at Home Park. After eight minutes, Rami Al Hajj scored his first goal to cap off his debut. In the second half, Ibrahim Cissoko, a substitute, scored twice before Victor Moses scored the Hatters’ reply. “Everyone at the club is buying into what we are trying to do,” said Rooney. “There’s a really good feeling around the club.”
