Even in its 20th year, the Championship continues to captivate with its unique blend of excitement and unpredictability, often surpassing the drama of the Premier League.
There’s a certain charm about the Championship. It’s so insane that, despite still being capable of mounting a promotion bid, the involved clubs are never more than a few weeks or results away from the discomfort of the drop zone. Unpredictability and jeopardy go hand in hand.
Undoubtedly, the Championship plays a crucial role in the football ecosystem, as evidenced by the 19 players selected for England’s Euro 2024 team who had honed their skills in this league. Seven of these players even started the match against Spain.
The Championship class of 2024-2025 is a testament to the league’s rich history, boasting a former Premier League champion, seven First Division winners, twelve FA Cup winners (seven of whom won it more than once), a European Cup runner-up, a UEFA Cup runner-up, and eight League Cup winners—now known as the EFL Cup. A truly imposing trophy cabinet.
There isn’t a second division in football history that can match this impressive array of honors.
The unpredictable nature of the league adds to its allure. The action reel for 2023–24 was jam-packed with drama and entertainment: Ipswich won back-to-back promotions, Michael Beale played for 63 days at Sunderland, Wayne Rooney played for 83 days at Birmingham, Milutin Osmajic scored a hat-trick in seven minutes, and Wesley Hoedt scored from halfway line. Moments that contribute to the overall depth of a league brimming with diversity and never-ending interest.
Young, dynamic talent abounds, as does a fascinating array of managers. After winning the Championship title on their first attempts with Burnley (2023) and Leicester (2024), respectively, Vincent Kompany and Enzo Maresca have since secured top positions in the Premier League and Bundesliga.
However, the Championship is more than just a venue. It is a haven. The game’s legends square off against former players turned managers in a pick-and-mix-style miscellany.
For the upcoming season, Chris Wilder (Sheffield Utd), Daniel Farke (Leeds), and Mark Robins (Coventry) will face off against Michael Carrick (Middlesbrough), Tom Cleverley (Watford), Scott Parker (Burnley), and of course Rooney (Plymouth). John Mousinho (Portsmouth) and Danny Rohl (Sheffield Wednesday), two rookie managers, are also involved. There’s enough strategic subtlety to spark curiosity.
But the Championship is more than just a location. It acts as a refuge. Legends of the game face off against former players who are now managers in a miscellaneous pick-and-mix format.

Two rookie managers, Danny Rohl of Sheffield Wednesday and John Mousinho of Portsmouth, are also involved. Enough strategic nuance is present to pique interest.
The Championship is now the wealthiest non-top-flight league in the world and the one with the highest attendance rates; the play-off final’s estimated value to its fortunate victor (during three years) is £305 million.
Jude Bellingham, Jack Grealish, James Maddison, and Ollie Watkins, all currently England internationals, are among its most well-known former players. Archie Gray is the most recent young player to be selected in a multi-million dollar deal by a Premier League powerhouse. For background, Championship teams received £3,834,108,124 billion in player export revenue during 2004–05.
However, this is also the area with the most level playing field and the core of “competitive balance.” where ambiguity is welcomed, and unpredictability flourishes.
Its evident charm endures, even though its quality may not rival the Premier League’s.
