Championship Roundup: Wayne Rooney Sent Off in Late Plymouth Drama

Wayne Rooney was sent off during a dramatic finish at Home Park just before Plymouth secured a last-minute 2-1 win over Blackburn. Morgan Whittaker scored the decisive goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time, nodding in Adam Randell’s header from Lewis Gibson’s cross. Plymouth led in the 15th minute through on-loan Burnley striker Michael Obafemi. Still, Blackburn’s Joe Rankin-Costello equalized in the 86th minute, prompting Rooney’s furious reaction, which led to his dismissal. He missed Whittaker’s last-gasp winner from the touchline.

In another match, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi celebrated his 22nd birthday with a standout performance, leading Sheffield United to a 2-0 win over struggling Luton. The Crystal Palace loanee scored in each half, giving the Blades a comfortable victory and drawing them level on points with Sunderland at the top of the Championship.

Watford defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 after coming back from behind. This victory came just before the international break. The visitors took the lead through a George Edmundson goal. Still, Kwadwo Baah and Edo Kayembe, who came on as substitutes, tied the score with a half-volley on minute 87.

Paul Heckingbottom was not impressed with his Preston side’s 0-0 draw at Burnley, believing that their practice sessions on free-kicks had been hampered by a “bad” offside call. Emil Riis timed his run onto Ben Whiteman’s free-kick to sweep a shot into the net, depriving Preston of a goal in the fourth minute, even though replays showed the Danish forward was onside. “It’s disappointing for me, disappointing for them and the fans,” said Heckingbottom. “It’s a bad decision. If that had gone in and we’d got three points, I don’t think anyone could have begrudged us that.”

West Brom and Millwall drew 0-0 at The Hawthorns as the latter could not take advantage of home advantage once more. Following their 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough at home on Tuesday, the Baggies found it difficult to score goals once more, going three games without a victory. Josh Maja, Albion’s top scorer with seven goals, missed their best opportunity, but despite controlling the first half, they were unable to open the score after the interval.

Angus Gunn, the keeper for Norwich, is questionable for Scotland’s upcoming Nations League games after suffering a knock during his team’s 4-0 victory over Hull. Gunn, who has emerged as Scotland’s number over the previous 12 months, sustained an injury at Carrow Road in the latter half of the first half and did not return.

After a sluggish beginning, Norwich’s performance was impressive as they maintained their rise up the table with four wins in six games. Marcelino Núñez and Josh Sargent scored two goals early on to give them the lead, assisted by some shoddy defending. They were then able to afford Sargent’s missed penalty, and Kaide Gordon’s first goal since joining on loan from Liverpool and Borja Sainz’s eighth of the year sealed a comfortable victory.

Following Portsmouth’s 1-1 draw with Oxford, head coach John Mousinho expressed regret to assistant referee Bhupinder Singh Gill for what he perceived to be a discriminatory remark he made from the stands. Singh Gill reported to referee Lewis Smith what he considered to be insulting comments made to him at Fratton Park during the second half. Before a PA announcement alerted the audience, Smith stopped the match and reported the remarks to the fourth official. “I’ve apologised to the linesman after the game if anything was said and I know that it will be dealt with appropriately,” said Mousinho. “Everyone here will condemn it.”

The match saw its fair share of drama, as Louie Sibley netted his first goal for Oxford to cancel out Brighton loanee Mark O’Mahony’s second strike of the week. Meanwhile, Marcus Harness scored his first Derby goal, helping secure a 2-0 victory over struggling QPR at Pride Park. Derby broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when Curtis Nelson headed in from a corner, and less than a minute later, Harness doubled their lead with a fine first-time finish. The win ended Derby’s three-game losing streak, while QPR remains in the relegation zone.

Sheffield Wednesday clinched a late 2-1 victory over Coventry, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Shea Charles. Djeidi Gassama had earlier canceled out Jack Rudoni’s opener for Coventry. Still, Charles, on loan from Southampton, struck in the third minute of added time to secure the win. Elsewhere, Swansea were held to a goalless draw at home by Stoke, who missed a golden opportunity when Tom Cannon went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but fired straight at Lawrence Vigouroux.
