Wayne Rooney secured his first Plymouth victory as manager when captain Joe Edwards scored a dramatic winner in stoppage time, ending Sunderland’s undefeated Championship start. In the third minute of extra time, Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson brilliantly saved a thunderous effort from Kornel Szucs. Man-of-the-Match Edwards was the first to react, scoring a vicious goal of his own to make it 3-2.
After Patrick Roberts’ first-half penalty, Daniel Ballard’s own goal and Ryan Hardie’s penalty saw Plymouth rally from behind. Romaine Mundle later equalized for Sunderland, but Edwards sealed the victory against the leaders. Meanwhile, third-place Burnley ended Leeds’ perfect start to the season with a brilliant breakaway goal in the first half from Luca Koleosho, and Blackburn defeated Bristol City 3-0 in a commanding performance at Ewood Park. After Lewis Travis’s first goal, Yuki Ohashi added two more goals, for five goals in five games since joining Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
Watford and Coventry drew 1-1 at Vicarage Road in a thrilling match. Ellis Simms’ header off a post and into the net gave the home team the lead after less than four minutes for the third straight game, which was a terrible start for them. On minute 67, Tom Dele-Bashiru equalized from close range.
Des Buckingham, the manager of Oxford, praised his team after Idris El Mizouni’s goal just after halftime helped them defeat Stoke 1-0. The U’s have won each of their first three home games this season, indicating that their return to the Championship has been met with ideal conditions at Kassam Stadium. “I hope our fans realize that a lot of really hard work has gone in this victory again today,” said Buckingham. “We’re putting together a way we want to play: collectively we’ve been impressive again.”
Kenzo Goudmijn’s goal in the first half gave Derby a 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Cardiff at Pride Park, their ninth straight home league victory. Goalie Jacob Widell Zetterstrom of the Rams made a series of excellent saves in the first half. However, Goudmijn’s first-time finish from Callum Elder’s low ball into the box after 28 minutes sealed the victory. Derby’s winning streak continues at home with this victory, while Cardiff has lost all five opening games.
A masterfully cushioned volley by Mads Frokjaer-Jensen gave Preston a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough. Tommy Conway’s first goal for Boro in the 16th minute was canceled out by the Danish midfielder two minutes before halftime. Following the restart, there were few and far between opportunities for either team to make the crucial breakthrough, forcing them to settle for a point.
Swansea won their first league game in three, defeating Norwich 1-0. Amankwah Forson’s fourth-minute own goal separated the sides in a match between two teams still in early-season transition.
At Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday and QPR drew 1-1 thanks to two goals in stoppage time that created a fantastic ending. After an incredible finish, Owls captain Barry Bannan thought he had given his team the win, but substitute Alfie Lloyd scrambled in an equalizer with the final kick of the match.
And although Luton’s winless run finally ended with a 1-0 victory at Millwall, manager Rob Edwards felt his team was forced into a fight. Teden Mengi’s early goal put Luton ahead. Luton had not tasted victory since they defeated Bournemouth in the Premier League on April 9. This run included 11 games and their relegation.
But they faltered in the last moments and were grateful for two outstanding saves from goalie Thomas Kaminski. “In the end, they sort of wore us down, and there were a lot of long free-kicks and long throws,” said Edwards. “It just became a real battle. But we showed some character, some fight.”
