At Home Park, the match reached a dramatic conclusion when Wayne Rooney was sent off. Moments later, Plymouth midfielder Morgan Whittaker scored a dramatic winner in added time to defeat Blackburn 2-1.
In the final minute of stoppage time, Whittaker headed home Adam Randell’s header back into the goalmouth after Lewis Gibson had sent the ball deep. Argyle was applying more and more pressure.
On-loan Burnley striker Michael Obafemi gave Plymouth the lead in the fifteenth minute against the run of play. Still, Joe Rankin-Costello of Blackburn equalized in the eighties thanks to a cross from Dominic Hyam. Since Rooney was fired for his irrational response to the equalizer, the Plymouth manager could not witness Whittaker’s last-ditch effort.
Sheffield United easily defeated struggling Luton 2-0 at Bramall Lane thanks to a brilliant 22nd birthday performance from Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. The loanee from Crystal Palace scored a goal in each half to give the Blades a convincing victory over the Hatters, who didn’t provide much for the game. The Blades’ victory brought them level on points with Sunderland at the top.
Watford defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 after coming back from behind. The game picked up steam after George Edmundson gave the visitors the lead. Edo Kayembe and Kwadwo Baah, the substitutes, returned, with Baah’s half-volley on minute 87 securing the victory.
Paul Heckingbottom was displeased that a “bad” offside call derailed his Preston team’s practice session work on free kicks, as they managed to draw 0-0 at Burnley. When Emil Riis timed his run onto Ben Whiteman’s free kick to sweep a shot into the net in the fourth minute,
Preston was denied a goal; however, replays showed the Danish forward was offside. “It’s disappointing for me, disappointing for them and the fans,” said Heckingbottom. “It’s a bad decision. If that had gone in and we’d got three points, I don’t think anyone could have begrudged us that.”
West Brom’s struggles at home continued with a 0-0 draw against Millwall at The Hawthorns, marking their third consecutive game without a win. Following a 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough earlier in the week, the Baggies failed to find the back of the net again. They couldn’t create clear chances after the break despite dominating the first half. With seven goals this season, top scorer Josh Maja missed their best opportunity to break the deadlock.
In other news, Norwich City cruised to a 4-0 victory over Hull City. Still, their triumph was overshadowed by an injury to goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The Scotland international, who has become the nation’s first-choice keeper, was forced off before halftime, casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming Nations League fixtures. His replacement, George Long, stepped in as Norwich extended their unbeaten run to six matches, moving up the table after a slow start to the season.
Norwich’s win was aided by Hull’s poor defending, allowing early goals from Marcelino Núñez and Josh Sargent. Despite Sargent missing a penalty, Norwich maintained control, adding further goals from Kaide Gordon—scoring his first since joining on loan from Liverpool—and Borja Sainz, who netted his eighth of the season.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth’s head coach, John Mousinho, apologized to assistant referee Bhupinder Singh Gill following an alleged discriminatory comment from the stands during Pompey’s 1-1 draw with Oxford. The incident occurred in the second half at Fratton Park, prompting referee Lewis Smith to halt the match briefly and make a public announcement, reminding fans to refrain from offensive behavior.
“I’ve apologised to the linesman after the game if anything was said and I know that it will be dealt with appropriately,” said Mousinho. “Everyone here will condemn it.”
The match, which featured plenty of excitement, was marred by an off-field incident, despite Louie Sibley scoring his first goal for Oxford to equalize Brighton loanee Mark O’Mahony’s second goal in a week.
At Pride Park, Marcus Harness opened his Derby County account, helping them win a 2-0 over struggling QPR. The Rams struck twice quickly after the break, with Curtis Nelson heading in from a corner in the 54th minute and Harness doubling the lead with a clinical first-time finish just moments later. The win snapped Derby’s three-game losing streak, while QPR remained in the relegation zone.
Sheffield Wednesday snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Coventry thanks to a stoppage-time winner from on-loan Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. Djeidi Gassama had drawn Coventry level after Jack Rudoni’s opener. Still, Charles secured all three points with a strike in the third minute of added time. Meanwhile, Swansea were held to a goalless draw at home against Stoke. Stoke had a golden opportunity to win it late on when Tom Cannon broke through on goal, but his shot was saved by Lawrence Vigouroux.
