West Brom held their place at the top of the Championship after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Plymouth at the Hawthorns. Carlos Corberán’s side were frustrated early on, hitting the post three times in the first half. Josh Maja thought he had broken the deadlock just before halftime, but his goal was ruled out for offside. However, Maja struck again on the hour mark, securing the win and keeping West Brom at the table. It was a harsh reality check for Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth, coming off a decisive victory against Sunderland the previous week.
Meanwhile, Sunderland, sitting second, claimed a 1-0 derby victory over Middlesbrough, with teenager Chris Rigg scoring a slick back-heeled finish. Burnley, in third, kept up the pressure with a dramatic 2-1 win over Portsmouth, thanks to Josh Brownhill’s last-minute strike. Burnley had fallen behind after Callum Lang’s first-half goal for Pompey. Still, Jeremy Sarmiento equalized just after the hour. Brownhill sealed the victory with a low shot deep into stoppage time.
Sheffield United moved to fourth, extending their unbeaten season with a 1-0 victory over Derby. Gustavo Hamer’s fourth goal of the season secured the Blades’ third straight win, with Hamer a constant threat throughout the match.
Leeds bounced back to winning ways with a 2-0 win at 10-man Cardiff. Largie Ramazani scored his first goal for Leeds, and substitute Joel Piroe wrapped up the victory late. Cardiff’s chances were dealt a blow early when Joel Bagan was sent off for a last-man foul on Willy Gnonto just 23 minutes into the game.
Bristol City came from behind to defeat Oxford 2-1 in an entertaining contest at Ashton Gate. Ruben Rodrigues volleyed Oxford into the lead after a strong run from Siriki Dembélé. Still, City equalized through Sinclair Armstrong before Nahki Wells converted a penalty in the 76th minute following a contentious foul on Haydon Roberts.
Norwich put on a dominant display in a 4-1 home win over Watford. Callum Doyle opened the scoring early for Norwich. After Watford’s Ryan Andrews equalized, Borja Sainz restored the lead just before halftime. Marcelino Núñez added a third, and substitute Ben Chrisene capped off the scoring as Norwich produced what head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup described as their best performance since his arrival.
“I certainly feel we’re moving in the right direction,” said Thorup. “We are not where we want to be yet but this was the best performance since I’ve been here. I was so pleased for the players – it hasn’t always been the case this season, but today they were rewarded with three points for a really good performance.”
Luton forward Carlton Morris came off the bench to score twice, securing the Hatters’ first home win of the season in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Kenilworth Road. Barry Bannan had given the Owls the lead early in the second half. Still, Luton manager Rob Edwards made a game-changing triple substitution, bringing on Morris, who netted both goals in the final 15 minutes to end Luton’s home win drought since April.
Swansea also earned their first away points of the season against Coventry, winning 2-1 at the CBS Arena. Luke Williams’ side took a two-goal lead in the first half, thanks to strikes from Liam Cullen and Oli Cooper before a Ronald own goal offered Coventry a way back into the game.
Millwall’s manager, Neil Harris, remained optimistic despite his team settling for a 1-1 draw against QPR. Duncan Watmore put the Lions ahead, but Michael Frey equalized for Rangers five minutes before halftime. Although Millwall were the dominant side, they couldn’t capitalize on their chances to secure a second goal. “Glass half-full; a dominant display, really good with the ball and created numerous chances,” said Harris. “We’re disappointed not to win the game, obviously, and frustrated would be the right word as well, but glass half-full because it’s been a tough venue for us.”
