On a night when all three top teams triumphed, Leicester ended a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory at Sunderland, maintaining their three-point lead at the top of the Championship.
The Foxes maintained their lead over Ipswich, who needed a late goal from Leif Davis to overcome Bristol City 3-2. Meanwhile, Leeds, currently in third place, kept up their winning streak against Stoke, winning 1-0.
Leicester’s 13th goal of the season, scored by Jamie Vardy, proved to be the winning goal in the 13th minute. Sunderland lost for the fifth time in a row as their goalkeeper, Mads Hermansen, produced a superb save to keep Trai Hume’s equalizer from happening.
Regarding Vardy, Leicester manager Enzo Maresca stated: “We know very well that Jamie is so important for us. He has been so important this season, and he will be important for the end of the season. He has experience, but also he has done in his life and is doing the most important thing in football, that is scoring goals.”
Ipswich managed to stay in the game only after a wild second half at Portman Road. Tommy Conway’s header in the 77th minute gave City the lead again after Anis Mehmeti had put the Robins ahead and Ali al-Hamadi had tied the score. Ten minutes remained before Davis secured the victory, and Conor Chaplin headed Ipswich level. Even though Max O’Leary of City saved a penalty kick for Hamadi, he could not prevent Ipswich from winning six games in a row.
Manager of Ipswich, Kieran McKenna, stated: “It was a brilliant way to win a football match. A night and an end to a match and an atmosphere we have to enjoy and some quality that was shown in the second half that we have to be very, very proud of. Another really good night for the football club.”
After Leeds defeated Stoke 1-0, Daniel Farke said it was his team’s “best win in 2024” as they maintained their push for automatic promotion.
After the half-hour mark, Wales international Dan James gave his team the lead with his 11th goal of the season. However, he could have had a couple more in the first half, but for Daniel Iversen’s saves. Illan Meslier denied chances from Tyrese Campbell, Josh Laurent, and Lewis Baker in the second half, but Stoke did not give up. To prevent Leeds from scoring a second, Mateo Joseph saw one of his substitutes, Ben Pearson, sent off late in the game.
Farke said: “For me, it is the best win in 2024 because everyone expects us to win this home game. Everyone expects us at Elland Road to beat each and every opponent right now against a team not in the best position and think it should be an easy win. It feels like in the stadium ‘we are going there for a cup of tea and a cake’ perhaps instead of this explosion we had against Leicester where everyone was on it.”
After a 1-0 victory over Plymouth made it four straight wins, Sheffield Wednesday moved into the relegation zone on goal differential. Stoke’s defeat saw them draw even with points near the bottom of the table. Djeidi Gassama scored the crucial goal at the hour by converting Ike Ugbo’s cross.
After Coventry’s 5-0 thumping of bottom-dwelling Rotherham, who are three points outside of the playoff spots, on Wednesday, the difference between them and the team now sits at 19 points. Coventry led 4-0 at the half thanks to goals from Joel Latibeaudiere and Ellis Simms, who netted a hat-trick in the first half at the CBS Arena. Stoppage time was needed for Fábio Tavares to seal the deal.
In their battle against relegation, Birmingham gained a crucial point when they drew 1-1 with playoff-bound Hull, moving the Blues one point clear of the cellar. Ozan Tufan gave Hull the lead with a header in the first half, but Lukas Jutkiewicz tied the score in the 82nd minute as the Tigers were unable to capitalize on their lead.
After Sammie Szmodics saved a point in a 1-1 draw with fellow struggling team Millwall at Ewood Park, Blackburn is now two points clear of the drop zone. Ten minutes after Michael Obafemi had put the Lions ahead, Szmodics took advantage of a defensive blunder to score just past the hour.
