Suppose Atletico Mineiro defeats CRB in the second leg of their match on Wednesday at Arena MRV. In that case, they can avoid losing to the Copa do Brasil round of 16.
In the first leg of this match, the Belo Horizonte team overturned an early deficit to draw 2-2 with Galo de Praia at Estadio Rei Pele.
Before their match against CRB reached the 10-minute mark, Atlético Mineiro was two goals down. However, Galo showed resilience and fought back to avoid defeat.
This was the first time since 2018 that Mineiro failed to win the opening game of the Copa do Brasil Round of 16. They drew 0-0 with Chapecoense before being eliminated on penalties in the second leg.
Historically, Mineiro has struggled to advance beyond this stage of the competition when tied after the first leg. They last did so in 2016, when they edged out Ponte Preta on away goals to reach the final, where they were defeated by Grêmio.
Under Gabriel Milito, Atlético Mineiro has been solid at Arena MRV, winning its last three home matches across all competitions. It has only suffered one loss in its previous 16 home fixtures, a 4-2 defeat to Flamengo.
In the Copa do Brasil, Galo has been dominant at home, winning 11 straight matches. Their last home loss in this competition was against Grêmio in the 2016 final’s opening leg, where they fell 3-1.
This year, Atlético Mineiro has only lost once, when scoring the opening goal, a 2-1 defeat to CA Patrocinense in the Campeonato Mineiro back in January.
CRB started the opening leg of this tie with a bang, but fatigue eventually caught up with them.
They managed just 26% possession and allowed six shots on target. Despite that, the 2-2 draw marks their first positive result at this stage of the Copa do Brasil, putting them within striking distance of their first-ever quarter-final appearance.
Under Daniel Paulista, CRB has been strong on the road in this competition, remaining unbeaten and yet to concede away from home. However, they have struggled overall, failing to win any of their last eight away matches.
A win on Wednesday would make CRB the first Serie B team to reach the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals since Cuiabá in 2021. However, the club from Maceió enters the game in poor form. They are winless in their last four matches and are coming off a 2-0 defeat to Operário in Serie B last weekend.
CRB has a history of pushing Serie A teams to the limit in this tournament. They forced Athletico Paranaense to penalties in last year’s third round and famously knocked out Palmeiras in a shootout in 2021.

Atlético Mineiro’s top scorer this season, Hulk, was forced off after just 16 minutes in the first leg with a suspected calf strain and is unlikely to feature in the return leg. Additionally, Alisson is sidelined with a sprained ankle, Mauricio Lemos is dealing with a muscle injury, and goalkeeper Everson is recovering from a broken finger.
In the first leg, a 41st-minute penalty from Paulinho halved CRB’s early lead, with Gustavo Scarpa equalizing just nine minutes after halftime.
CRB will be without Willian Formiga on Wednesday, as he received a straight red card shortly after Mineiro’s equalizer last week. Formiga, on loan from Ceará, had put CRB ahead after just six minutes. On loan from Atlético Goianiense, Leo Pereira added a second shortly after.
