On Tuesday, in a highly anticipated showdown, Vasco da Gama and Atletico Goianiense will face off in the crucial Copa do Brasil Round of 16, marking their third meeting in as many weeks.
With a spot in the quarterfinals still up for grabs, after the first leg ended in a thrilling draw in Goiania last week, we can expect a nail-biting match between the two teams at the Estadio Sao Januario.
On Saturday, Vasco da Gama showed their resilience, fighting to the end in a 2-2 draw with Red Bull Bragantino after conceding a late equalizer in the 89th minute.
Bragantino took the lead early with a goal from Jhon Jhon in the fifth minute. Vasco responded with a strong turnaround as Gabriel Souza and Adson scored within 10 minutes. However, a late strike from substitute Helinho salvaged a point for Bragantino.
This draw extended Vasco da Gama’s winless streak to three Serie A matches. After a previous run of four straight victories, the team earned only one point from the last nine available.
Currently 11th in the league, Rafael Paiva’s team has shifted focus to the Copa do Brasil, where they have shown notable form. After defeating lower-tier Marcilio Dias and Agua Santa, Vasco narrowly advanced past Fortaleza in the Third Round, winning on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate draw. They aim to capture their first Copa do Brasil title since 2011.
Atlético Goianiense breezed through the early rounds of the competition, securing a 3-1 victory over Real Brasília on March 7 and following it up with a 5-2 aggregate win over Serie B side Brusque in May.
However, Vagner Mancini’s team struggled last Wednesday in the Round of 16 first leg, settling for a 1-1 draw against Vasco at Estádio Antônio Accioly. Despite Maguinho’s red card, Pablo Vegetti’s late goal in the 88th minute salvaged a draw for the visitors, equalizing Emiliano Rodriguez’s early seventh-minute strike.
Atlético Goianiense heads into the return leg without a win in their last 13 matches across all competitions, with five draws and eight losses. This includes a heavy 4-1 defeat to Botafogo in Serie A on Saturday.
Looking to turn their fortunes around, Goianiense faces a tough challenge at Estádio São Januário, where they have won just one of their last nine visits, with seven losses and one draw since May 2009. Their recent away form also offers little hope, having lost their previous four away games and failing to win their last six. They have conceded 12 goals and scored only four since their 2-1 victory at Fluminense on June 16.
