Northern Ireland defender Jamal Lewis has expressed his strong desire to bring Premier League standards to the Brazilian Serie A as he nears an impressive transfer to the South American powerhouse, São Paulo. Known for his skill and tenacity on the field, Lewis believes his experiences in one of the world’s most competitive leagues can significantly impact his new team. He is excited about the opportunity to compete at a high level in Brazil, where he aims to elevate the quality of play and contribute to São Paulo’s rich footballing history. As he prepares for this new chapter, Lewis looks forward to showcasing his talents and learning from Brazil’s vibrant football culture, all while striving to succeed with his new club.
The Newcastle United left-back is on the verge of a surprising transfer to Brazil after being deemed surplus to St James’ Park requirements. This unexpected move comes after a challenging period for the player, who has struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup. With the Magpies focusing on strengthening their squad and making tactical adjustments, Lewis found himself on the outside looking in, leading the club to explore options for his departure. The prospect of playing in Brazil represents an exciting new chapter in his career, offering him the chance to rejuvenate his playing time and showcase his skills on a different stage. As he prepares for this transition, he and the club hope this change will benefit all parties involved.
Although the transfer has not yet been officially confirmed by either São Paulo or Newcastle United, Lewis took the opportunity to share his excitement with local reporters upon his arrival in Brazil. He expressed genuine enthusiasm for the prospect of joining the renowned club, highlighting his eagerness to integrate with his new teammates and adapt to the vibrant football culture in Brazil. Lewis conveyed his anticipation for what lies ahead, including the chance to compete for titles and make a meaningful impact on the team. His positive remarks reflect his readiness for this new challenge and his hope that this move will reinvigorate his career as he embarks on this fresh journey in South American football.
“I want to try and win Cups and push up the League. I’m super excited to meet all the São Paulo fans. I’ve seen some games and I can’t wait to step out on that pitch,” he said.
“The Premier League is intense, it’s tough, it has a lot of quality, so hopefully I can bring a lot of that and contribute to São Paulo.”
Lewis rejoined Newcastle’s squad this summer after spending the previous season on loan at Watford, where he gained valuable experience and playtime in a competitive environment. Upon his return, expectations were high that he would reintegrate into the team and potentially contribute significantly to their campaign. Many anticipated that he would return to the Championship for the upcoming season, where he could leverage his skills and showcase his abilities in a league he was previously familiar with. However, as the season progressed and with the addition of new players to Newcastle’s roster, his opportunities became limited, leading to speculation about his future with the club. Ultimately, this situation set the stage for his impending move to Brazil, marking a new chapter in his professional journey.
His conviction was strengthened when he was omitted from Newcastle’s first three matches of the Premier League season against Southampton, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest.
However, the Magpies could only finalize a deal after the transfer window closed, leading to Lewis’s upcoming move to Brazil. Whether this transfer will be permanent or on loan remains to be seen.
The 26-year-old signed with Newcastle in 2020 from Norwich City for £15 million and subsequently made 36 appearances for the club; however, he has not played a match at St James’ Park since December 2021.
Lewis was initially anticipated to join the Northern Ireland team today in preparation for their Nations League double-header against Luxembourg and Bulgaria. However, manager Michael O’Neill has announced that he will now join the squad later in the week instead.
“Jamal is planning to join us later in the week after he completes his Visa requirements and medical checks in Brazil. We wish him the best of luck in his new move to São Paulo,” commented the boss.
