Sky Sports has reported that Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis has officially arrived in Brazil. This marks a significant moment in the player’s career as he prepares to make a new start. The 26-year-old left-back is on the verge of finalizing a transfer to the prominent Brazilian club, São Paulo, where he hopes to rejuvenate his footballing journey.
Former manager Steve Bruce initially signed Lewis for a fee of £15 million, which underscored the club’s expectations for him. However, despite being granted a five-year contract, he has struggled to demonstrate the necessary qualities to thrive in the Premier League. His time at Newcastle has been marked by limited opportunities, leading many to question his fit within the team’s dynamics.
Lewis moved to Newcastle in 2020 and secured a lengthy contract that provided him with stability. However, it now seems highly likely that he has played his last game for the Magpies, with only ten months remaining on his current deal. This uncertainty about his future has prompted him to seek new challenges elsewhere.
As for the Brazilian football calendar, the season kicked off in April and is scheduled to wrap up in December. This timeline presents Lewis with a fresh opportunity to make his mark in a new league, and he will be eager to contribute to São Paulo’s ambitions in the months ahead.
Having played 24 matches in the current season, São Paulo is positioned fifth in the league standings. They are currently nine points behind the top team, Botafogo, which is leading the table. However, it is worth noting that Jamal Lewis’s new team has a game in hand, providing them an opportunity to close the gap. The competitive nature of the league means every match is crucial, and São Paulo is determined to make the most of their remaining fixtures to climb higher in the rankings.
Once Jamal Lewis’s transfer is officially completed, it will signal a significant shift for Newcastle United, representing the departure of 13 players from their squad. This roster overhaul reflects the club’s strategic changes and aspirations for the future. In addition to these departures, Newcastle has secured the signing of six new players, indicating an active transfer strategy to strengthen the team (further details can be found below).
‘The Newcastle United transfer window has finally closed for business.
After all those days of excitement, frustration, and tension, the window closed at 11 pm on Friday, 30 August 2024.
We can do it all again in January 2025 in four months, and it all kicks off once more.
However, it is time to review what turned out to be an ‘interesting’ Newcastle United transfer window.
Will Osula be the final incoming player when signed on 8 August 2024, meaning these last 22 days of the window have not seen a single signing, not even on loan?
Lloyd Kelly – Free agent
Odysseas Vlachodimos: The transfer fee paid/due to Forest is reported to be between £4m and £20m, as he was part of the PSR deal that saw Elliot Anderson go the other way for a reported £35m fee.
John Ruddy – Free agent
Lewis Hall – Permanent £28m signing triggered after loan season.
Miodrag Pivas – The 19-year-old arriving for a reported £1m from FK Jedinstvo
Will Osula – Arrived from Sheffield United in £15m deal.
Paul Dummett – Released
Matt Ritchie – Released
Loris Karius – Released
Jeff Hendrick – Released
Kell Watts – Released
Elliot Anderson – Sold to Forest for a reported £35m
Yankuba Minteh – Sold to Brighton for a reported £33m

So, in total, twelve players are heading out of St James’ Park, with six coming in.
While no more incoming signings can come in as the Premier League window has closed, the transfer windows in Turkey, Belgium, and Saudi Arabia remain open. With claims this week of Vlachodimos set to go on loan to Anderlecht in the coming days, while a surprise if Isaac Hayden stays at NUFC, he went to Standard Liege last September (2023).’
