Newcastle United’s left-back Jamal Lewis is on the brink of an exciting transfer to the renowned Brazilian club São Paulo. This potential move has garnered significant attention within the football community, particularly given the stature and historical significance of São Paulo in South America. Known for its rich tradition and competitive spirit, São Paulo is a team that consistently performs at a high level, making this transfer a noteworthy development for Lewis’s career. The opportunity to join such a prestigious club presents an exciting challenge for the 26-year-old defender as he looks to further his development and showcase his skills on a larger stage in one of the continent’s most competitive leagues.
After spending the previous season on loan at Watford, where he gained valuable playing experience, Lewis anticipated rejoining the Championship side before the English transfer window came to a close on Friday. His loan spell at Watford was designed to give him increased playing time and the chance to hone his skills in a challenging league. Many observers believed that returning to the Championship would benefit his career, allowing him to continue his development in a competitive environment where he could gain further experience and confidence on the field. With the prospect of more regular first-team football, Lewis was poised to showcase his abilities and solidify his place as a critical player in the squad.
The 26-year-old has successfully reintegrated into Eddie Howe’s squad during the pre-season, showcasing his skills and determination by participating in several friendly matches. Despite his efforts, Howe has indicated a willingness to allow Lewis to leave again, as the player currently finds himself positioned behind Lewis Hall, Lloyd Kelly, and Matt Targett in the team’s pecking order.

This competitive environment has made it clear that Lewis would benefit from a fresh start. Reports have now surfaced suggesting that São Paulo is set to be his next destination. Lewis arrived in Brazil on Sunday to finalize the details of his much-anticipated transfer.
While Howe did not confirm Lewis’ next club, he did admit he could leave. He said: “The players who have been linked to move like Jamal Lewis could leave, but certainly we hope no one else does.”
Lewis moved to St. James’ Park from Norwich City in 2020, with Newcastle United securing his services for a fee of £15 million. Since arriving at the club, he has contributed to the team by making 36 competitive appearances across various competitions. His last outing in a competitive match occurred on the final day of the 2022-23 season. In that match, he came on as a substitute during an away game against Chelsea, marking a notable moment in his time at Newcastle. Despite facing challenges securing a regular starting position, Lewis has remained a part of the squad during his tenure.
His loan agreement with Watford contained an option for the club to buy him outright. However, after evaluating his performance and fit within their squad, the Hornets ultimately opted not to activate that clause. As a result, he is set to return to his parent club at the end of the season and will find himself without a contract next summer. This situation leaves him facing an uncertain future as he looks to find a new opportunity in the coming year.
“I’ve always really rated him and held him in high regard ever since his Norwich days when I was a really big fan of his,” Howe said on last month.
“Working with him, a great attitude, wants to improve and he’s really benefited from his loan spell. Coming back into the group, he’s trained really well.”
“Ultimately, a lot will depend on what he wants, if he wants to continue playing football and it might be difficult for me to guarantee him that so we’ll wait and see.”
