CommBank Young Matildas forward Jynaya Dos Santos has embarked on an exciting new chapter in her career by signing a one-year contract with Canberra United for the upcoming 2024-25 Ninja A-League season. This move marks a significant step for the talented young player as she aims to make her mark in a new environment, bringing her skills and enthusiasm to a club eager to make an impact in the league. With the upcoming season on the horizon, Dos Santos is not just set to further develop her talent in a competitive setting, but also to wholeheartedly contribute to Canberra United’s ambitions, showcasing her commitment to the team.

With her significant role in two Championship-winning campaigns, Dos Santos has a strong foundation of experience. Her time with the Sky Blues came to an end when she was released from the final year of her contract, a decision mutually agreed upon to allow her to pursue more consistent first-team opportunities elsewhere. By joining Canberra United, Dos Santos is looking to take her career to the next level, seizing the chance to play regularly and showcase her potential on a bigger stage.

“Jynaya is a very exciting talent and will be an important addition to our attacking stocks as we get closer to the start of the new A-League season,” said Canberra United head coach Antoni Jagarinec.

“We watched her performances for Sydney FC with interest and, when it became apparent that she would be available, we had no hesitation in adding her to our team.

He added: “Jynaya fits the profile of the players we want at Canberra, and I am convinced she will be a success here.”

Now 18 years old, Dos Santos honed her skills in the highly regarded Sydney FC academy, where she not only cultivated her talent as a forward but also formed a strong bond with her sister, Indiana Dos Santos, who is also a member of the Young Matildas. Growing up in such a competitive environment allowed Jynaya to develop her technical abilities and understanding of the game, benefiting from the guidance and training the club’s experienced coaches provided. Throughout her time with Sydney FC, she made eight appearances for the first team, gaining valuable experience and exposure in high-pressure situations. Ultimately, after weighing her options and considering her career trajectory, Dos Santos decided it was time to seek new opportunities that would enable her to continue growing as a player and expand her horizons in the sport.

After her time in the academy, the transition to the first team was a pivotal moment for Dos Santos, providing her with the chance to showcase her abilities on a larger platform. Despite making only a handful of appearances, each match was an important learning experience that contributed to her development as a player. However, after careful consideration of her career goals and aspirations, she felt that pursuing opportunities elsewhere would be beneficial for her growth and allow her to secure more regular playing time. This decision reflects her ambition and determination to succeed in the highly competitive world of professional football.

“I am very much looking forward to playing for Canberra United,” said Dos Santos after her move was made official. “Especially in front of the noisy home supporters that the club has at McKellar Park.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sydney FC but need to further my career by playing more minutes, more regularly, and I believe that I will get that chance in Canberra.

She added: “The club is renowned in the league for affording young players an opportunity, and I can’t wait to start.”

Dos Santos becomes the fourth new addition at McKellar Park this off-season, joining former Sydney FC teammate Aideen Keane, New Zealand international Elizabeth Anton, and goalkeeper Sally James.

A major highlight of the club’s off-season has been the renewal of star striker Michelle Heyman’s contract. The 2023-24 Ninja A-League Golden Boot winner has committed to another season in green, after finding the back of the net 17 times last season.

Her exceptional performance earned her a recall to the Matildas squad, leading to her participation with Australia at the Paris Olympic Games earlier this year.

Additionally, Heyman made history by breaking the Ninja A-League goalscoring record, becoming the first player to reach 100 goals in the competition.
