Paris Saint-Germain maintained its 100% start to the Ligue 1 campaign after coming from behind to beat Stade Brestois 3-1 at the Parc des Princes. The Parisians won their opening four league games for the seventh time in their history.
The Parisians got off to a frantic start, swarming Marco Bizot’s box, which was kept inside the opening quarter hour. The Dutch goalkeeper was first called into action to deny Nuno Mendes and then his Portugues teammate Joao Neves with a tremendous save.
The hosts should have scored minutes later after Mendes picked out Marco Asensio. Still, the Spaniard skied his effort when bearing down on goal.
Despite the excellent work the Portugues full-back was showing going forward, a moment of madness at the back allowed Brest to take the lead from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark after he pulled Ludovic Ajorque down in the box.
Romain Del Castillo stepped up and sent Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way.
Undeterred after falling behind, Luis Enrique’s men continued to dominate and pressed forward to draw level.
Achraf Hakimi broke down the right before flashing the ball across the box to Asensio. Still, the Spaniard failed to get a full connection on the ball, allowing Bizot to save.
However, the home side continued to probe and duly got their reward a few minutes before half-time after Asensio made up for his prior misses by whipping a pinpoint cross onto the head of Ousmane Dembele, who nodded in at the back post.
After the restart, PSG picked up right where they left off, dominating possession and posing several threats to the Brest goal.
Dembele, in particular, looked the most threatening down the right for the Parisiens. The former Barcelona winger had Bizot on the stretch after cutting in and curling an exquisite effort with his left foot. Still, the Dutchman managed to make the save.
At the hour mark, Asensio did have the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was rightly ruled out for offside.
Another Spaniard did get the elusive second goal for PSG. Fabian Ruiz expertly curled the ball home from the edge of the box after being picked out by Hakimi.
Finally, in the lead, the hosts scored a third goal a minute later, as Dembele was on hand to fire in the rebound after Randal Kolo Muani’s shot was blocked.
After an initial scare in the first half, Enrique’s side ran out of comfortable winners, and their attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League, with Girona visiting Paris on Wednesday. B
The rest will also be in action. They will make their debut in Europe’s top club competition when hosting Austrian side Sturm Graz.
Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique said he was lucky to have a great team in charge after his team earned a 3-1 comeback win over Brest on Saturday, their fourth Ligue 1 win in as many games this season.
An Ousmane Dembele double and a Fabian Ruiz brilliant strike helped PSG remain at the standings on 12 points, two clear of Marseille and Monaco.
The Spanish coach was praised for his France forward Dembele, but he said any of his players could have scored several times as he led a quality side.
“I didn’t realise he scored two goals, it was a difficult match against a tough team, the least important thing is that he scored two goals, we had many chances for several players to score,” Enrique told reporters.
“I’ve been a Dembele admirer for many years, he’s a different player, he comes out on the left and on the right, he has a change of pace, he’s intelligent.
“When you are lucky enough to have players of the quality I have, it’s a pleasure and a privilege.”
Enrique added he was grateful for his squad’s depth and versatility, as he was able to rest several key players ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Girona.
“Versatility is what makes this squad, of course you miss some players but I have seen the same ability to play, we are a young team full of desire and hunger, it’s a wonderful feeling,” said the former Barcelona and Spain coach.
“We were able to rest several players, but (Lucas) Beraldo, (Milan) Skriniar were sensational, Fabian is in great shape as last season and at the Euros, Kang-in Lee was superb, Joao Neves great in attack and defence.
“I am very fortunate to have this kind of team, the goal is that everyone wants to keep winning titles.”
The club announced on Sunday evening that Adrien Rabiot (29) will sign for Ligue 1 side Marseille after passing a medical.
L’Equipe’s Marseille correspondent Mathieu Gregoire revealed on X that Marseille and Rabiot were in talks over a two-year contract. The information was correct. OM announced the player’s arrival, subject to passing his medical.
Since the end of his contract with Juventus last June, the French international midfielder has not found a new club and was absent from the latest Les Bleus squad. His salary in Italy was between €7 million and €7.5 million net annually.
Raised at PSG, Rabiot becoming a Marseille player would add spice to the next Classique.
