Young Brazilian sensation Gabriel Mec has agreed to a lucrative transfer to Chelsea, where the Blues will pay up to £20.5 million ($26 million).
Globo reports that the west London club, not satisfied with the £56 million ($71.5 million) acquisition of Palmeiras’ Estevao Willian, has splashed a further £17 million ($22 million) on his compatriot, a youthful offensive midfielder who has not yet played professionally in Gremio’s Mec. Add-ons might push the cost up to £20.5 million. The Under-20 international player is scheduled to stay in Brazil until 2026 when he will turn 18 and fly to London.
Mec is the latest addition to Chelsea’s youth investment strategy. His substantial transfer fee indicates the high expectations the club has for him. As he strives to make a name for himself in Gremio’s first team before his move to Chelsea in April 2026, the football world will be watching his progress with anticipation.
Conor Gallagher, an England international midfielder, is one of Chelsea’s more seasoned players. He is expected to leave the team as they continue to lavish money on youth. The 24-year-old is reportedly scheduled to go to Spain to finalize his transfer to Atletico Madrid.
This future-focused deal will not solve Chelsea’s current, to put it mildly, unsettled predicament. The team’s preseason has been lackluster, and new manager Enzo Maresca has had trouble implementing his preferred style of play thus far. They still have two friendlies left, against Real Madrid and Inter, before they play a challenging match against Manchester City to begin their 2024–25 season.
Chelsea has made progress in their negotiations with Gremio to recruit teenage player Gabriel Mec.
The arrival of Todd Boehly has sparked a significant shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy. The club is now focusing on nurturing fresh and exciting talent, as seen in the signings of Renato Veiga, Andrey Santos, Estevao Willian, Omary Kellyman, Kendry Paez, Angelo, and Gabriel Solina.
Chelsea’s strong interest in Gabriel Mec is not a coincidence. According to the Brazilian publication Globo Esporte, the club has successfully negotiated an agreement with Gremio for Mec’s transfer.
The 16-year-old reportedly received an offer for a five-year contract with a two-year option. This Sunday’s closing might cost £21 million (€24 million).
Neymar Senior, the player’s father, was sent by Mec to Porto Alegre to negotiate with Gremio after Gremio turned down an initial £13 million offer. Having stated that Mec will only be permitted to finish the relocation to London after turning 18 in April 2026.
Willian’s move from Palmeiras to west London will only be completed in the summer, so the same thing will happen to him.
Mec posted a photo of a church on his Instagram stories on Sunday along with the caption: “All the honor and glory given to you, my God.”
In the meantime, his father, Robson de Carvalho, posted a photo of the two of them. “God’s plans are bigger than ours. God is good all the time,” he wrote.
Mec has been likened to Neymar and is even predicted to surpass him in the future. Ben Mattinson, an expert, commented on X, the former Twitter: “Gabriel Mec is making waves in Brazil. A 2-footed, skilful Brazilian attacker. Neymar-esque play-style and comes from the same academy (Grêmio) as Ronaldinho.
“Hard to not be excited by him. Mec has rapid feet able to do skills so quickly that he can fool defenders easily. A joy to watch, he’s a real throwback Brazilian.”
The young player, who has made six appearances thus far in Gremio’s Brasileirao campaign, is now a member of the under-20 team.
