On Tuesday, Brazil’s football federation (CBF) announced that several national league matches would be postponed for 20 days due to severe flooding in various regions. This decision comes in light of the ongoing crisis caused by heavy rainfall, affecting many areas and making it unsafe for teams to travel or compete. The CBF’s move aims to prioritize the safety and well-being of players, staff, and fans while allowing affected regions to recover from the devastating conditions.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul has been severely impacted by flooding since last week, with torrential rains causing widespread devastation in the region. This alarming situation has led to significant disruptions, prompting the three local clubs International, Grêmio, and Juventude—to request that the CBF postpone their upcoming matches formally. The clubs voiced their concerns about the safety of players and fans and the logistical challenges posed by the flooding, which has made travel and competition increasingly tricky. Their appeal reflects a collective effort to prioritize the well-being of everyone involved in the sport during this challenging time.
“The CBF announces that all matches involving teams from Rio Grande do Sul in national competitions, as home or away, are postponed until May 27, 2024,” the CBF said in a news release.
Authorities have reported that at least 83 individuals have tragically lost their lives in the region over the past week due to the severe flooding and associated disasters. In addition to this staggering loss, there are still 111 people who remain unaccounted for, raising concerns about their safety and well-being. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing as teams work tirelessly to locate those missing and assist affected families. The situation continues to evolve, and officials are closely monitoring the impact of the flooding on communities in the area.
The stadiums of International and Grêmio, located in Porto Alegre—the state’s capital—have been severely flooded and sustained significant damage due to the rising waters. This unprecedented flooding has impacted the playing fields and the surrounding infrastructure, leading to concerns about the long-term effects on these iconic venues. Both clubs, which have rich histories and passionate fanbases, are now facing challenges as they assess the damage’s extent and begin the recovery process. The community is rallying around these teams, hoping for a swift restoration so they can return to their homes and continue supporting their clubs.
