Manchester United had Anthony Martial on their roster for nine years until his departure following the expiration of his contract this summer. The French forward’s time at Old Trafford concluded ceremoniously after he fell out of favor with manager Erik ten Hag. However, reports suggest that the former United star may soon find a new home, as Fabrizio Romano indicates that Brazilian club Flamengo is interested in acquiring his services on a free transfer to strengthen their attacking options, particularly in light of injury problems that threaten to derail their season.

Martial initially had a promising start to his career at Old Trafford. He immediately scored a spectacular goal on his debut in the Premier League against Liverpool in September 2015, cementing his place in United folklore. However, his tenure in the northwest took a downturn, with only 12 goals scored in the top flight over his last four seasons, spread across 64 appearances. This disappointing performance ultimately led to his departure on a free transfer this summer, and now a potential move to Brazil appears to be on the horizon.

According to the report from Romano, Flamengo has ‘reached out’ to Martial regarding a possible transfer to South America as they seek to fill the void left by their current star, Pedro.

Pedro has been sidelined due to an ACL injury, which makes acquiring a new forward crucial for Flamengo’s ambitions to compete for titles this season. Consequently, the club, known for its historic Maracanã Stadium, has contacted Martial. Given that he is available as a free agent, he could represent a wise investment for the Rio de Janeiro team. However, it is also believed that the Frenchman is weighing several options for his future before making a decision.

Anthony Martial’s Premier League Stats: Season-by-Season Breakdown of His Man Utd Record

2015 – 163111
2016 – 17254
2017 – 18309
2018 – 192710
2019 – 203217
2020 – 21224
2021 – 2281
2022 – 23216

Martial switched to Manchester United from French club Monaco in September 2015, signing for an initial fee of £36 million, which at that time made him the most expensive teenager in the world. Although the total deal could have escalated to £57.6 million, the final amount settled at £44.7 million, as only one of the three performance-related clauses was fulfilled.

During his time at Old Trafford, the French forward only left the club once, moving to Sevilla on loan for the second half of the 2021-22 season. However, his stint in La Liga was disappointing, as he scored just one goal in 12 appearances, which resulted in him returning to England under less-than-favorable circumstances.

Martial Would Be a Valuable Acquisition for Flamengo

The Frenchman possesses undeniable talent and would be a significant asset to the team.

While Martial’s last few years at United did not unfold as planned, his quality remains apparent.

The Premier League can be a harsh environment, and he experienced this firsthand during his final seasons at Old Trafford. However, he demonstrated his prowess by scoring 17 goals in the 2019/20 season and netting an additional ten the year prior, showcasing that even at 28, he has much more to contribute.

With 30 caps for France—despite a modest tally of two goals—his selection alongside renowned players like Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann underscores his ability and importance in the national team setup.

Flamengo, one of Brazil’s most prestigious clubs and the 2022 Copa Libertadores champions—South America’s equivalent to the Champions League—has gone four years without securing the top-flight title.

They could benefit from Martial’s skills, particularly alongside Gabriel Barbosa, as they aim to reclaim their place at the top of Brazilian football.
