Ben Chilwell is content to stay at Chelsea, even though he has fallen down Enzo Maresca’s pecking order, with players like Marc Cucurella and new signing Renato Veiga now preferred. Despite this, Chilwell remains committed to the club and is ready to fight for his place. However, footballnews.today has learned that Chelsea is still considering a late-summer transfer move for him as the UK transfer window nears its 11 p.m. Friday deadline. While a permanent transfer seems unlikely, a loan deal without an obligation to buy is being discussed, especially since several other European and international transfer windows remain open beyond the UK deadline. Chilwell is open to moving if the right opportunity arises. Still, he is not actively seeking a departure, leaving Chelsea to weigh their options as they aim to balance his significant wages with the squad’s needs.
Chilwell is not considered an ideal fit for the left-hand side of Maresca’s defense. At Leicester City, Maresca developed a system where full-backs either transitioned into central midfield or dropped back to form a back three. In contrast, Chilwell plays a more traditional role at left-back, offering width and an attacking threat. This approach has resulted in him scoring nine goals and providing eleven assists in 106 appearances for Chelsea.
Because of this, Marc Cucurella has overtaken Chilwell as Maresca’s preferred left-back choice. Even newcomer Renato Veiga, who joined FC Basel this summer, is ahead of the England international in the lineup. While Chilwell has not been excluded from first-team training, his diminished role, highlighted by his absence from Maresca’s matchday squads for the first two Premier League games, has sparked speculation about his future at Chelsea as the summer transfer window nears.
This week, Brentford explored the possibility of signing Ben Chilwell to bolster their defensive options. However, after evaluating their choices, they invested in youth, securing Jaydon Meghoma from Southampton for £10 million instead. The 18-year-old left-back is a long-term prospect with significant potential to develop at Brentford. On the other hand, despite ongoing rumors linking Manchester United with a move for Chilwell, no formal discussions were initiated between the Red Devils and Chelsea. United opted not to pursue the 27-year-old England international, focusing their attention on other targets.
According to GMS, Chilwell is happy to stay at Stamford Bridge and is only actively seeking a move if the right opportunity comes. However, with several European transfer windows still open, Chelsea are exploring options for Chilwell. A lending arrangement without a purchase option is the most likely scenario. Chilwell is open to a temporary move abroad. However, like Raheem Sterling’s potential deal with Arsenal, any move would depend on an agreement over his wages. Chilwell currently earns over £200,000 weekly, a significant hurdle for many clubs.
Clubs in the Netherlands, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia can make signings until September 2nd. Still, Chilwell is reportedly not interested in moving to the Middle East. The Turkish Super Lig window remains open until September 13th. Chilwell has already been offered to Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce following their Turkish international Ferdi Kadioglu’s recent transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.
If Chilwell decides to stay, he will speak with Maresca the following week to better understand how to integrate strategically into the Blues coach’s system. Despite losing the vice-captaincy, he is still regarded as a senior squad member. He does not anticipate being barred from first-team training. He is not likely to be included in Chelsea’s registered team for their Europa Conference League campaign, nor will he be included in matchday squads for crucial games.
